Could someone explain the reason for cracked noses,I have come across a few labradors with this.One that i saw looked as if it was infected.Have seen this in both yellow and black.

That is funny as Moose my middle girl has a crusty, cracked nose. She has been seen by the vet and he is not overly concerned by it. We have tried moisturising it but she just licks it off. She developed this after eating the white dental chews and always had a tide mark after a long chewing session. She doesn't have them now but the crusty nose has remained! It doesn't concern her and has never been infected but would like to know if anybody 'nose' the reason behind it ! :D She is chocolate so it is not a conditon specific to colour !

Its not just labs that seem to suffer with it, Callum has had a dry cracked nose for a while, i give him vit e tabs and something from the vets called panalog ointment which is actually used for ear infections works a treat because it sinks into the nose quite quickly.

You can also pierce the VitE capsule & rub a little straight on. Might help.

Stuart our vet didn't say why it happened on Moose and as I said he was not overly concerned. It doesn't at all bother her just gives her a nickname of Crusty Nose sometimes !! We have just started trying E45 cream as this doesn't really smell and is absorbed quite quickly.

Mooses crusty nose improved for a while but is as bad again. :( The nose has also gone a very light brown colour, almost the colour of very light chocolate blancmange. I remember a thread about noses changing colour but can't remember what it was about. Can anybody help ?

I had a similar problem with an alsation dog and a red setter . I tried medicine from the vet but that did not work . The Alsation was not mine but the solution below was effective for his very badly damamged nose.

The Red Setter ( rescued from Dog Pound ) was run down with dry skin but the main problem was his dry and cracked nose.

The solution to Euro's (Dogs Name) none problem was to mix a tablespoon of olive oil into the dogs dinner every day. Be careful not to give her too much as it will run her food from her body !!!!!!!!!

3 weeks later the dog appearance was much better , moist and black nose and a happy dog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My old chocolate boy developed a crusty nose. Every so often I would pick it all off, but it came back every time.

Didn't seem to bother him, but looked unplesant.

She is going to see Uncle Stuart the vet this afternoon as it has got so bad over the last week it is bleeding and she has got a slight infection in it now :(

It is funny about the olive oil as she normally gets a cod liver tablet with garlic everyday but we have been having a new kitchen and we have lost the big tub of tablets and have only just found them again so I wonder if it is this that has caused it to get so worse ??

Anyway we will see what he says and hopefully she won't have to have it chopped off as we keep telling her ! Poor thing :D

Well she has been put on a course of antibiotics and medrone which I think is a steroid ? (can anybody confirm?) and have been told if it doesn't clear up she needs to go back. My husband mentioned about not having the cod liver tablets and he agreed it may well have been a trigger! £67 for this

We shall see how she goes but hopefully she will have her normal nose back soon ! :)

If she has been on AB's I'd give some natural live yoghurt or maybe Pro Biotics . Moor Gold tonic may be worth trying along with giving the cod liver oil, as well as Christine's suggestion.

There are a number of things that can cause a dry, cracked nose on a dog so it is important to have your dog take a blood test at the vet. The causes can range from autoimmune diseases, infections, kidney problems, or it could be caused by too much sun and the start of cancer on the nose. It might be as simple as just drying out from excessive rooting around in the dirt or extremely dry air.
The blood test should consist of a complete thyroid panel including Total T4, Free (Unbound)T4 Total T3, Free (Unbound)T3, Endogenous Canine TSH(cTSH), Canine Thyroglobulin Auto-antibodies (TgAA), and T3 and/or T4 Auto-antibodies. Also do a complete Superchem and a CBC. I recommend Antech Diagnostics because they offer a complete range of thyroid tests. Besides checking for the normal values indicated on the tests, make sure the vet also checks for values the are in either the high or low ends of the normal ranges. This could indicate tendencies toward an unhealthy situation, which if ignored, could lead to future problems. It might not be wise to put your dog on steroids until verifying that the problem is not stemming from the immune system. Steroids tend to supress the immune system and will make the problem worse in the long run.

After you have ruled out medical conditions, there are various nutritional internal and topical external remedies you could try.

Think its just something to do with old age in some dogs , in others medical probs , 1 of my cockers had kidney fail and had a light brown crusty nose. she also lost quite a bit of hair on the muzzel/top part of her nose
Dont worry just keep your eye out. there could be so many different reasons why
mabe even the diet of the dog. id ask the vet when you go next time.
