Can anyone put me in touch with someone that is fully aware of the dangerous dogs act in Spain. We are moving there and have found a website that lists our dog although on the Spanish Embassy website we can't find any information. We are led to believe that we would need a psychological assesment (much the same as applying for a gun license), so would our dog, and it would have to be muzzled and on a lead no longer than a metre, although apart from this one website we cant find anything to back this up. All help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I have now found something in a book that backs up what I initially read on a website, its as follows:

There are 8 breeds defined as 'dangerous'- akita, american staffordshire terrier, dogo argentino, fila brasileiro, japanese tosa, pit bull, rottweiler and staffordshire bull terrier. 'Dangerous' breeds also include dogs that have all or most of the following characteristics - a strong and powerful appearance, a strong character, short hair, shoulder height between 50 [$ 70 cm and weight over 44lb] square and robust head with large jaws, wide and short neck, broad deep chest, robust forelegs and muscular hind legs.

It also confirms that a psychological test etc will have to be performed BUT what goes unanswered to my questions is can i have these tests done in England or do I take our dog to Spain and have her contained in the house until these tests are carried out? Also if you have heard of any revised legislation that has happened since this book was written (2002), Christine, it would be of great help to know Thanks for looking into it for me.

Hi Lorraine, they started DD going by weight of dog but scrapped that a while back. Just got of the phone to prsedient of andalucian KC & as far as they know right now the Dde B is not on the list 99% sure dad says yes but daughter says no & she`s usually right! but it may change soon. It`s very difficult to know exactly whats what here as they change all the time & no one ver seems to know whats what! They are going to see if they can find out more so will let you know what they come up with.
Dogs on the DD list have to be muzzled & on short lead while out but not when at home. You have the psychological test done here, you apply to your local town hall for it when you get here. So you would keep here in the house till it`s done. HTH

And if they dont pass then they are taken away, this is what they were doing in Germany.

Hi C/Girl, how`d you know that happens in Spain?
Germay is renowned for following rules, Spains notorious for flouting them!

Thanks for that information Christine, it would be great if it turned out that she wouldnt be put into this 'catogory' although I am feeling rather pesimistic about it. Is anyone aware of the type of tests that the Dog is put through? I have visions of a complete stranger poking and prodding to tests for reactions and to be honest I think I would turn round and smack someone if they were persistantly doing that to me....but I think my imagination is running away with me... Corso girl, you mentioned that the dog is taken away if this test is failed, don't you have the opportunity to return the dog back to where it came from if this happens, and where are they taken to? OMG i'm going to be having nghtmares tonight!!

Any more info would be welcome if anyone has anything to add

Thanks, Lorraine

Lorraine it depends on what area you`re going to as each municipality have their own rules! I`ve never known Maria Jose to be wrong so I wouldn`t be too worried. She`s talking about Andalucia. I don`t know how C/girl knows dogs are sent back, maybe she could let us know where that info came from, as Im` pretty sure you`d be able to take the test again or return it to UK & thats IF its on the DD list which we don`t even know yet!

Hi Christine,

It is actually Andalucia that we are moving to, Probably the Alpujarra's. Think I will stop panicking for the moment and await your friends advice.

Thanks, Lorraine

Hi Jane, Pepi gpt back late last night from a meeting in Madrid & hopefully he remembered to find out! His wife`s not asked him yet cos he went to work early this morning but she`ll let me know as soon as she can.
Here`s the actual law in english & your dog isn`t on it :) All he`s trying to do now is sse if it`s been amended to include the d de d but up to know we can`t see it has, or any of the regions has included it. For Maire Jose to contadict her dad she`s gotta be right :) :)
