my 5 month old akita lies on the floor and just stares at me,is this a challenge or what does it mean?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 09.09.03 06:43 UTC
Staring is something that Akitas go in for and I think it may well be a challenge, or she could just be trying it on. Think I would move her if she did it to me, just to let her know it had no effect and if I wanted her to move then move she will. Either call her to you, send her into another room or to her bed or just decide you want the area of floor she is lies on.

she has been doing it all day today again,it does get kind of unnerving after a while!!!

Would ignore it, shut the door on her or walk away. She could just be in love. :)

EDIT: Bit flippant of me, think you should do lots of obedience exercises with her, for short periods several times a day. Recalls and quite walking, sit on command and that sort of thing.

i have been doing those things with her so maybe things will get better.now i just stare back at her untill she looks away, but she just glances away and then looks straight back at me(think i will get her some sunglasses!)

staring back is generally not a good idea
- By billybob [gb] Date 10.09.03 22:20 UTC
why is that,if you look away does that not mean that you have let her become the more dominant between you.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 10.09.03 22:26 UTC
Just ignore her, you wont win in the staring stakes unless you have time on your hands. Avoid eye contact and turn your back after a few moments call her to you and praise if she comes if she does not, ignore and remember to do some more work on the recall, try and make sure any reaction between you is done on your terms. It could be she is just waiting for something to happen but I would not try stareing her out else you are playing her game and the idea is to get her to play yours.

thank's for your advice jackie,i will try that tomorrow and see what happens.

i agree with jackie...staring is confrontational, and is likely to make the dog do it more! it shouldnt be a battle between you. just look away, ignore her. (then you cant see her starin :) )

I have a 9 month old akita and she does the same and even if you look at her for a split second she barks playfully and wags her tail and then comes over and licks me or anyone else that does it....we all try not to look at her when she does it and now she has started to not do it as much. So the best thing is to ignore her.
