Hi
Lola my 5 month old Dobe has started hassling the cats when they are feeding. When they get fed up and clear off, she eats their food. Is this OK? I'm now trying to feed them where she can't get at it but sometimes she gets in. If they leave any she scoffs it:(

It's ok for dogs to eat cat food but not for cats to eat dog food. But only as extras would not make it their main food. Often give a slow eater some cat food on their complete as mixed with some warm water it encourages to get the food down.

Hi Jacki
Thats what I thought. Lola is fed on dried and I wondered if it would help as she appears to love the cat food. :)

Well, the world being what it is I expect someone to join in and say no way should you, but I have been doing it for about 50 years and it was Kit-E-Kat in those days.
If you mix a small amount of cat food with a little warm water and pour on the complete, it may well make all the difference between the dog cleaning the dish or walking away. Warmed food always seems to go down best if you have a picky eater, even if it is warm water on the complete.

hate to disagree but my old cocker used to eat the cats food she used to be a bit bossyand push my two cats away, she ended up overloading her body with too much protein, cat foods got alot more in aparently, and something or other happened anyway we ended up having to put her on this low protein food at 1.30 a tin and not very tasty, its bright white.
Im just talking from what actully happened to my dog, im sure others will say its not or it is ok , only you can decide after youve read all the posts:D

Expected someone to disagree, I said a small amount, tined cat food is 60% water, the very best cat food will have a protein level of between 20 to 30% but a tablespoon full will at most be 60% water and 30% protein about the same amount of protein as in a cube of cheese and far less than in a pilchard or a half a tin of tuna.
Can only repeat that I have done it for years and had no trouble, it could be that the dog in question had an intolerance to protein anyway and the problem was not to do with the cat food but just with the bodies inability to deal with protein.
No way should cat food be the normal diet for a dog in the same way as you would not feed just chease or only meat.

Cat food is far higher in protein than dog food, which is why dogs love it so much, and why they also love cat poo so much - there is still a lot of protein left in the poo! My vet told me to give my elderly anorexic dog, who had liver cancer, cat food to tempt her appetite. He said that normally dogs shouldn't eat it, but in this case it wasn't going to do her any more harm than the cancer, and the alternative was have her put to sleep - which we had to do 10 days later.
