Please can someone tell me what is required by law on an ID tag?
- By Bec [gb] Date 22.01.02 13:13 UTC
Full name (yours) and address and telephone number
- By issysmum [gb] Date 22.01.02 13:28 UTC
Alternatively, if like us your FULL address won't fit, your house number and postcode is acceptable.

e.g. 6 RG41 5XP

Legally only the keepers name and address.....'Control of dogs order 1992 - Under this order, every dog while in a public place must wear a collar with the name & address of its' owner on it. The fine for letting your dog stray is £2,000.

Although - having said that, I have only my phone number on my two.....

I don't think "working" dogs are included

I am a little concerned because I have been advised not to have your name & address on the tag because of dog thieves who can hold you dog to ransom. Is there a high incidence of this? Anyway I have a generic tag to a central number where our details are registered. Am I breaking the law???

Hi Jabba, not sure if it is against the law however I do not have my home address on my dog tags. I have the home telephone number on one side and My vets telephone number on the other side (Both clearly marked) that way if eer one of my dogs went missing and was involved in an accident hopefully some kind person would contact my vet. They also have their identichip tags on their collars as well to show they are microchipped.
I think the address point though is a bit of a grey area and I asked the very same question a few months back when my lab was doing her good citizen. 50% of the replies that came back said by law her tag must show my address and the aprox 30% said not too bother and the rest weren't too sure. I went throught the following thought process, others may be different.

When going on holiday you are always advised NOT to put your address on your luggage label, only your postcode as it is all to easy to be spotted by not so honest in our community who then realise your house is potentially empty. How many times when walking your dogs and they are off the lead do people stop and say hello to them? Ok maybe I am being paranoid but there are so many horror stories of potential puppy buyers veiwing puppys then lo and behold a few days later the house is broken into and dogs stolen. Whats to say that some lovely person fussing over your dog in the park does not take note of your address and bingo either
a. That persons talks to a guy in a pub and wants to get one of my breed of dogs
or
b. Next tme you are out for a lovely walk (and how many people always walk at the same tme of day) you come back to find you've had visitors at home.

Yep call me paranoid and maybe because my house although on an estate is quite secluded, I prefer not to advertise my address. I'd rather risk a fine if it was against the law then put either my dogs or home at risk.

However the lab did pass her good citizen test without having my home address on her tag, although I am sure some will state that technically she should of failed.

So I'll sit on the fence on this one please :) I do what I feel comfortable and happy with.

I must admit if I find a dog straying I do like the address on the tag as I can walk them straight home. I have been in the position of having to walk a tagged dog home, tie it outside my house and ring the owners, as I had puppies at home. Even worse when there is no tag, and I had to do the same and wait ages for the Dog Warden!

so any tag is better than no tag!

My lot have my affix (it is easier and shorter than my name), address and phone no. on one side and the fact that they are chipped and tatooed and to contact petlog and NDTR. They also have their green chip tag! So three forms of ID :D

Control of Dogs Order 1992 - Collars

Every dog whilst on a highway or in a public place shall wear a collar with the owners name & address inscribed on the collar in some way.

Exceptions:
a) any pack of hounds.
b) any dog while being used for sporting purposes.
c) any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin.
d) any dog while being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep.
e) any dog while being used on official duties by a member of:
Her Majesty's Armed Forces,
Her Majesty's Customs and Excise,
The Police Force for any area.
f) any dog while being used in emergency rescue work, or
g) any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The owner of the dog and any person in charge of a dog that contravenes the above will be guilty of an offence. Dogs not wearing a collar may be seized as a stray, although this order will be executed by officers of the local authority such as a 'Dog Warden' and not the Police?
Control of Dogs Order 1992

NB:Failure to comply could result in prosecution and result in a fine up to £2,000

When I got my girl's tags done for their collar - I was told that I should put my house number and postcode on only - not the full address, so that if anyone found the dog they would be able to find me via the police, but not be able to get the information straight away. Therefore I am complying with legislation but avoiding giving too much info away to anyone who might be looking at their collars for other means.

Thanks for the info i have opted to just put our phone number on for now as i dont feel comfortable enough to put our address on it.

For everyones information you can get address off of the Royal mail website if you know the postcode. Hence why i am not comfortable just putting the postcode - just called paranoid (sp?)!

I have just received an ID disk from Petplan which they say is free for a year for me as joined the scheme a few weeks ago (seems to be £12 a year after that). It has their tel. no. etc on it and Petplan get in touch with the dog owner that way. Seems good to me. What do others think?
