Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Raw Chicken???

Has anyone heard if raw chicken can make a dog sick? My Mastiff that I rescued from the pound took my chicken that was defrosting, off the counter and devoured most of it. He seems to be acting okay, but I know that a person can get samonilla. I have only had him for two weeks, and all of a sudden, he has been eating the darndest things. Later today, he also took the whole butter dish off the kitchen counter and licked it clean. He also has been challenging my female around the food bowl. She used to be the dominent one, I feel the roles are starting to reverse. He seems to be hungry all the time.

If you7 searh on the acronym BARF (stands for bones and Raw Food, or Biologically Approprate Food) you will find that in fact many poeople are putting their dogs onto a natural rawfood diet based on raw chicken bones and all.

A healthy dog should have no problems with any bugs trhat were in that bird, as they are designed to eat food that would make us quite ill, in the wild scavenging food as well as killing it.

Ther are some good bokks on Raw Feeding a balnaced diet by Dr Ian Billinghurst and others. the best known is give Your dog a Bone, which outlines the principles of this approach, and there is one called the BARF diet, which goes into more deatail with recipes.

He has access to food all day long. He is approx 2 years old. It is hard to say because he was a pound dog. I have no knowledge of what he was fed previously to me owning him. I have been feeding him dry food with a bit of wet. (The same thing I have always fed my 5yr old female.) Because of my loss of my last dog to torsion, I never put the food up. Pedigree is the brand. I tried to switch once, but my female got sick. I think she is diet sensitive. I think it boils down to him liking people foods. Last week I had butter softening, 2 sticks, and he ate them both, and a whole loaf of bread to boot.

Thanks. I'm in the US. My female has never took interest in raw food, and I was quite suprised when I arrived home and he had taken what was to be dinner off the counter. I suppose I would find the foods mentioned in regular grocery? I wouldn't mind supplementing him, and will give it a go.
