Jack Russell wanted for breeding with my beautiful broken coated mainly white with some black bitch of 3 yrs old. Preferably the short legged type, and under 12" preferably at the withers, colour of stud dog not minded so long as mainly white. Is your terrier a Parson Russell, if so the legs should be in balance with the rest of the dog, and you would be best advised to ask the bitches breeder about the best stud for her. If your bitch is a small cross breed terrier I would like to know why you are breeding her. Not being confrontational but interested to know the reason. Hope you will join the forum and let us know.

I dont think the smaller Jack Russell is necessarily a cross breed (I may be wrong) although not recognised by the KC, I understand the smaller version has a large following who feel the breed should be recognised in its own right. - I'm sure someone will be along soon to shed some light, and correct me where needed.

Sorry, must say I thought that Jack Russells were small ratting terriers like lurchers and small game hounds, breed for a purpose but not always to one another. Have to say I formed that opinion because they differ so much in size and coat type.

Hey...I'm only dredging back through memory. I was hoping someone would come along and help me out, as I find it most confusing to have Jack Russells and Parsons. Hopefully someone will enlighten us soon.

The shorter legged JRT is indeed a breed and is the most commonly showed one in Australia, I believe they are trying here to get it recognised too. They have been around just as long as the other type, but they do tend to be barrel chested in a lot of instances and thats no good for working in tight places underground. They do however make efficient ratters and those of the correct shape will undoubtedly make good all round Terriers as do the others.

Suppose if they were recognised they would be more defined, at the moment they differ so much I think the term Jack Russell is generic for small terrier types. True Parson Jack Russells (now Parson Russell) are never short legged being only just a little longer than tall, and since they have been recognised they have become more noticable as a seperate breed, as I guess they always have but there must have been a good deal of out breeding at one time, now one asumes they are being bred for type.

Yes the short legged Jack Russell's are a breed! I specifcally breed them but they must have short straight legs not bow legged(as they come from dachshund & are not favoured by purists like myself).
They should be under 12" & preferably 10", they were bred in Cumbria by the hunts packs as the Parson terrier was too large for our huntsman & our area.
Recognition is being acheived in Ireland but we are waiting with bated breath for the english KC.
