Hi everyone,i have an 8 month old staffie dog and the only real problem i have had with him chewing is his bed,we had to buy him a plastic basket as he chewed everything else.He sleeps in the kitchen at night and has recently started to chew the wallpaper from the walls and chew the bottom of one of my kitchen cupboards,is there a reason why he's started doing this as didn't before and is there anyway i can prevent it,(he only does it at night)he's also very excitable and uncontrollable when visitors come to the house,so much so that he has to be put in the kitchen until they have gone. How else can i get around that problem.I have a 3 year old bitch as well and have never had any problems at all with her.Thanx in advance for any help :)

Hi,
Not sure what you can do about picking wallpaper and chewing cupboards, I have 2 staffs one 18months and one 15 weeks they have their mad 5 minutes when we have visitors and then they flop down and go to sleep, but by putting him/her in the kitchen until the visitors have gone I don't this is a solution my mom does this with her golden retreaver and 9 years on she is still doing it.
Sorry i can't be of much help to you good luck!

Hi
I also have 2 Staffies, a bitch 3yrs who doesn't chew anymore, and a 6 month male who will chew anything he can. He chews anything that might get left about, eg shoes trainers etc. Also he has had a go at walls and skirting boards, So he goes in the cage on a night, and also if I have to go out. I used to cage my bitch when she was younger too, but she doesn't need to be caged at all now. Couldn't you cage him on a night till he has grown out of it.
As far as the over excitement goes I think most Staffies are. My bitch is the worst even though she is the oldest, so I don't think they grow out of it. I find she gets much more excited with people who she knows don't mind her jumping around them, The ones that say it's ok, I don't mind. She seems to know and it makes her worse, then she seems to go deaf to my voice, which gets quite annoying so gets put in the kitchen out of the way. So I understand what your saying.
My pup is much more laid back and calms down pretty quickly, unless someone is deliberatly exciting him.
But they are both lovely dogs and we all love them to bits.
Michelle.

Hi i have a 2 year old staffy and she is not in to chewing so i must be realy lucky on that side of things. All she just wants to do is run after rabbits. Do you always put him/her in the kitchen they may not like being locked away. My staffy has the run of the house day or night and when people come round she goes mad and thinks that thay have come round just to see her. I tell people to say hello to her and then leave her alone. She then gets board and goes and lays down it has taken us to years to get her to do that. your staffy is still very young and all i can say is that it will get better

My lab pup Loves peeling of the wall paper try putting some bitter spray on his fav spot to chew worked for me!
i think a crate is a good idea...it will break the habit of destruction when unsupervised. dogs on the whole like crates :)

Angel eyes, I have got a 12 month old Staff dog and we went through the same sort of thing whereby on he ripped up the kitchen Lino and then decied to chewed the door frame of the kitchen door, which I sorted out by screwing some cut down guttering to cover the bits he could get to on the door frame - Screw holes are easier to repair than Staff chewing! I think it basically boils down to bordem as our damage happened when we left him for too long, which I hasten to add we have never done since. He also is the same when visitors come round, i.e. raving mad, but we have found that if you ignore him as much as possible and tell him to get down it works a treat. Don't feel you're on your own with this one as it seems they are all the same for the first couple of years but it does get better. Regards, Westy.

Thanks for your replies,he goes in the kitchen at night as i have another staffie and keep them seperated when not supervised(better safe than sorry)otherwise they have the run of the house. The thing that makes me laugh is that in the kitchen he has access to the dog food(which is on the units)and the bin,but he touches neither of them, just the walls and one cupboard and not every night, just when he feels like it.As for him and visitors,we have tried leaving him to get bored but he doesn't he just keeps on and on until eventually both we and the visitors have had enough and out he goes.

hi my boxer has done and still does the same thing. we have spent a fortune on dog beds, eg a £50 fleecy one that he completely shredded on holiday ( we let him off as we decided it was a defience thing as we were away!) another was a £70 supposedly indestructible raised off the floor type (as he suffers from allergies!) the first afternoon i left him with it, it was in bits!!!!!! he now has a plastic £10 wilkies one that he chews! but only a little! not to bothered as i'll be buggered if i buy him any more expensive ones!!!!!!! we live in mod property and he has pulled the (horrid!) woodchip from behind the tumble dryer (dont ask!) and in the downstairs toilet!!!) which we will have to replace! the latest is last week, whilst out fot the evening i returned to find the contents of my cupboards on the floor, and the cupboard doors chewed to bits! im dreading the bill as im sure we will be told they'll have to replace them all due to the being an old style!!!!! so your not alone! he's never chewed anything in the kitchen such as the cupboards before either and i've been working part time instead of full time to be at home with him more too, so i cant understand it either! bruno is very excitable too and i get emabarased about inviting people back as he's such a pain, (as much as i love him!) and alot of people dont know how to take it when he comes up to them. i usually put him on his lead/and halti and let him have his 10 minutes of exciability (without him jumping up too if i can help it.) seems to work a little. if i shut him in the kitchen he just barks the whole house down!!!!!!
