Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / boxer pup only poos in back garden
- By jannine [gb] Date 11.09.03 12:38 UTC
Hi
I have a boxer puppy (4 months old) who is housetrained and reasonably well behaved, the only problem is he has never done a poo on his walk, only ever in the back garden. I take him for 2 walks a day to various places and he has started to have wees but never poos. Ho does copy my older boxer boy when he has a wee but dosen't copy the pooing!!
Can anybody suggest anything?
Thanks

Why would you want him to poo on his walk, you will only have to pick it up and carry it home. Most of us would be pleased if our dogs only used our own land it is so much easier to deal with.

My boxer is 6 months old now, and he doesn't do anything on his walks, not even a wee :) Thats the way I like it, to be honest.

It is very rarely the girls do a poo when we are out ! Suits me ! :)

I think it's a matter of confidence - some dogs get it as they get older, some don't :( Normally it's not a problem, but it can be a worry if you go away on holiday and your doglet proceeds to hold it in for days and days because its not at home (happened to my dog :( ) Luckily she went before she exploded! Working on the dogs confidence by training may help - but I think it's just one of those things......

One reason it is a good plan to get your dog to relieve themselves on command, even then it is not fool proof. In the days before they let you take your dog outside at Crufts I had a bitch who refused to go even into the sawdust area that they were supposed to use, and would wait all day till we left the halls.

Most dogs will pee as they get older but most like somewhere to hide away if they need to poo. Bitches in paticular can be difficult a good few only going if there is grass, dogs will lift a leg with out trouble but will not empty unless they have been taught to do so.

that's really interesting! my pup's toilet spot is in the back garden by our little apple tree - when she wees, she nearly always goes in front or to the side, but to poo she nearly always goes round behind it where there's about a an 8" gap between tree & fence! had always wondered why - now i realise she probably likes a bit of privacy :), how sweet! its quite convenient, means her poos are tucked away rather than in middle of lawn where any poor unsuspecting visitor could tread - although sometimes ascertaining whether she has 'performed' for her reward treat is a little more difficult :D!

My 7 month old Boxer is the same ... with the exception of that doesn't mind the odd "dump" at Ringcraft classes - when he's supposed to be performing of course!

My 14 month pup has only recently started to poo outside the garden. He started doing it in the woods beside me, and then in the field. He still wouldn't do it anywhere else until he went to stay with my daughter 'cos his mum's in season. It took a few days before he would do anything, and didn't he just!! As has already been mentioned it's a confidence thing. Give him a bit of time.

hi

if all dogs only poohed in their back garden it would make parks and pavements far safer to walk on ,its a good thing she/he only does it in the garden.

My pup is exactly the same, and I have been told that he will grow out of it.

However, having read some of the posts here about convienience and cleanliness etc, I'm beginning to wonder if its such a bad thing, having him poo exclusively in the garden.....

hi i have a boxer too, hes 14 months and has only just this week started to do a poo outside!!!!! (on walks i mean!)
he has always previously done his 'business' in the garden! the funny thing is, is that he has a special spot, behind the shed! and he always does it there! he never does it anywhere else in the garden! obviously likes a little privacy! (which we think is brill!) it took him a while to wee outside too. i think its just normal boxer behaviour! a freind who has a boxer too says the same thing so i shouldnt worry! by the way does yours eat bubbles from the bath too? a bit weird i know, but he has a fascination with them as does my friends! we thought it was uniqe to them but possibly not?!!!!! funny breed arent they!!!!!

can i just say i do agree that its better if they do it in their own garden, and not on walks , but all resposible dog owners should pick it up anyway!!!!! it makes me cross when people leave it. especially on paths/open areas where everyone walks!!!!!! these signs saying you will be fine are all fine and well, but theres no bloody one to come and fine the culprits anyway!!!!!!!! dog pooh bins too..... theres hardly any near where we are. maybe they should provide more of them?

I was told by my dog warden that it was OK to put poo bags in accesible wheelie bins. The bins belong to the council and not the householder, and threfore there should be no reason to object as long as the poo is bagged.

I too find that my local authority is very poor on supplying poo bins, but the neighbouring one (I live on the border) has them on nearly every grassy area, including communal areas of verge outsie flats.

It may be worth campaigning for more bins, and more enforcewment of the bylaws, including the one on having dogs on leads on a public highway!

hi
my nine month dobe bitch will only poo in garden as well. Can walk for miles and do several peedles but will wait till in back garden before doing a poo.
So i got a special toilet bucket that is submerged in the ground and is located as far up the back as possible.
It does mean i never need to carry a poop a scoop when walking her.....but my shih tzu dog is a nightmare as he always poops twice every time we're out....(think its a dog thing as bitch has never been like that)
