i want to get my lab puppy spayed befor her first seson this is what are vet suggest because she will be a VERY big lab they think it safer to have it done while she small cos it a small operation. i was just wondering how old should she be to have it done cos time running out :)

It's the same operation, the age or size makes no difference, the vet is still going to remove her womb and ovaries and any attached tissues. The ovaries also product a considerable amount of the bitches hormones, so as far as I can make out the later the better, leaves the bitch less length of life to live with out them. Although the bitches reproductive organs are mainly to reproduce that is not their only function and they are not as someone else said, optional extras.

Hi
I have always been told it must be after there first season.I had my gsd spayed after her first season and had no problems at all,alot of people I have met that have had there bitchs spayed before a season almost all of them have had problems of some sort.Ring another vet and ask for a second opinon,or someone here may be able to give more info.Hope this has helped.J

I'm interested in this too having owned a bitch who we came very close to loosing with Proymetra.
Sal is 9 months old now and I was thinking of getting her spayed after her second season. Sal being in season isn't a problem but I am unsure as to whether to have a litter of pups from her as there are so many in rescue. Some people appear to breed Staffs with little or no thought and I wouldn't want to be responsible for unwanted pups, or people who shouldn't be allowed to home a stick insect owning my pups/pups.

Suggestions on Pro's and con's for spaying and age wise?

Confused bitch owner;

That's a really strange comment from a vet - wanting to spay because a puppy is large for its breed. I wonder what your vet would do with a mastiff or newfoundland?

Are you in the U.S.? If so, it still seems to be the advice from vets is to spay before the first season. In the UK the advice is to spay after the first season to allow the bitch to mature naturally. With a large breed dog, like your lab, many on this forum would advice to wait until after the second season, eg, until the bone structure and muscle structure are fully mature.

To say nothing of the brain ;) Lab puppies are great but not for 10+ years.
