Cover in vaseline, or kerosene etc and wait for tick to suffocate and drop off.
Burn it off with cigarette end (do not put kerosene on first)! :)
Buy some tick tweezers for pet shop and remove.
Do not pull out as you will leave head in.

Cigarette end?!! Not on my dog - too risky.
A special crochet hook from the vet is best DIY.

best diy thing to do with a tick is to cover it with Vaseline and let it drop off ......... might take a few days but it does work
Ann

Either spray it with Frontline and wait for it to drop off, or get a plastic tick-hook from the vet (or maybe pet shop).

I agree with Ann, its there now so I wouldn't attempt to pull it off even with a so called specialised tick hook, I think its too risky...Not as risky as a cigarette end though!!!! Stick to vaseline or frontline, personally I would try frontline first. Dont be surprised if it doesn't drop off immediately it will be reluctant to if it isn't fully fed, sounds horrible I know! They look hideous but I wouldn't try and pull it off..

I use Duramitex, its used mainly on pigeon lofts to kill mites, dab a small amount on the tick leave for 10-15 minutes then remove with tweezers, make sure you remove the whole tick including the head then wash the area. Make sure the tick is dead by stepping on it!

Hi kellie,
Nice and cheap a bit of surgical spirit from your local chemist, dab on the tick and hey-presto it drops of within 12 hours.

(Just to confirm what has already been said ) I travelled in Ireland for a while, and at certain times of the year we were removing 10 ticks a day from each dog - mainly the head and ears. We dipped a cotton bud in paraffin (from our storm lanterns!) and doused the ticks. After 5 minutes we would carefully pinch the ticks at the base (head end) with tweezers and slowly twist them out. We never had a single problem with 'bits' being left behind. I have even had attached to me and used the same method of removal - my advice really is first hand information!

Hi Clive
It makes you wonder just how many people on this post have ever even seen a tick let alone removed one.

I for one have & use Frontline never fails & they are killed & fall off, I keep a close eye on the affected dog & if found pop the tick down the loo
