Topic Dog Boards / General / Poo Problem!!
- By mentalcat [gb] Date 10.09.03 12:38 UTC
Hi guys. IF YOU OBJECT TO READING ABOUT DOG POO, STOP HERE!!!
Up until 4 months ago, I used a green 'dog loo' to clean up after my lab. It worked 'ok' not brilliant but liveable with. I now have another lab puppy and find that my 'dog loo' cannot cope with all the poo. My query is: what do you guys out there who live in multi-dog houses do with your poo. (sorry if this puts you off your lunch!). I'm not leaving it out for the dustbin men as that would mean leaving it a week before collection, and I'm not sure that its legal to do so anyway.
Do kennels and such like have a special 'poo' drain that joins into the waste water sewer? I dont live near anywhere that there is a red coucil poo bin, so I'm a bit stuck as to what to do with it all. One suggestion is to make a bigger dog loo myself, but as one of my dogs eats long grass regularly, I can't just flush it aout with 2 buckets of water, like it says on the instructions for my current loo.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I need to sort this out before the cold weather starts.
Thanks --Ali

Ours goes down the main drain flushed with loads of rain/recycled water

We put it, one 'offering' at a time, into the downstairs loo and flush it away.
:)

I have just won one of these green loo's from one of the dog magazines. I have not got it yet but as I have 3 spaniels do you reckon it is a waste of time setting it up?, usually I bag it and chuck it in the wheelie bin. If its a waste of time for 3 dogs I will sell it on e-bay instead!!!

We had one that couldn't cope with the output of a labrador and a dalmatian. All we had was a foul foetid stinking death-trap in a corner of the garden, waiting for an unsuspecting gardener .....

hi .

i flush mine down the outside loo
dont think a dog loo would cope with my lot ....lol
- By LJS Date 10.09.03 15:14 UTC
We bag it up daily and then tie the bags and in the wheelie bin it goes. I am amazed how much poo three Labs can produce in a day !! :)

We had one of those dog loo things and they were rubbish. You have to have the patience of a saint to let it bio degrade fully which you can't have much patience when it comes to poo ! :D

Same here - picked up in nappy bags (nicely scented), tied tight and into the bin. :)
- By LJS Date 10.09.03 15:46 UTC
Unfortunately they don't sell nappy sacks big enough for our poo !! :)
- By Fillis Date 10.09.03 15:56 UTC
You cant pick up 1 poo in a nappy bag? What do you feed them???
- By LJS Date 10.09.03 16:03 UTC
We use a bucket with a bag in it and then pick it up with a spade and a hoe. I can't bend down to pick poo up as have a bad back/pelvis at the mo and must admit picking poo up by hand is only fun when in winter and it is just fresh and nice and warm ! :D

We feed them on JWB and Nature diet and they have carrots for treats. They do on average three poos a day so that is nine poos a day to pick up. They tend to poo at home rather than out on walks.

You're forgiven then!...I had a mental picture of these GGGIANTTT Labs
- By miloos [gb] Date 10.09.03 16:16 UTC
we had one of those green dog loos but it was useless even with two labs.now we've got 4 we bag it up and put it in the doggy bin which is next to our house that no one seems to use anyway:)
- By sami Date 10.09.03 18:52 UTC
Ours was useless!! Like the rest of you, we were left with a stinky sludgefilled monstrosity in a deep flowerbed. It couldn't cope with 1 dog's poo, let alone 4.

The final straw came when we were having an extension built, and came back from shopping to find the builders convulsed with laughter.....One of them was desperate for a dump.....so had dropped his trousers and done it in the dog loo.

Needless to say, they were given an extra job.....digging out the dog loo, complete with it's new offering, and throwing it away with the building rubble. :D

Sami

PS We now bag it and bin it. The dogs take great delight in watching out the window for the dustbin men and the huge orange dustcart, 'cos we tell them "The monster's coming to eat your poo!!!" Causes great excitment every Thursday morning....(sad aren't we!)

Dog loos do not seem to cope well even with the waste from one dog, we are importing a septic tank from America that will cope with up to 4 dogs for more info contact Sally at Hextons www.hextonsltd.co.uk .

I also bag mine in nice scented doggy poo bags.... After hearing all the comments now and on previous post about the poo bins, I am SOOOOO GLAD I never bought one.
BTW, did you notice how i said "I" bag the poo?? Neither my partner, nor ex hubby ever picked up the poo. Does anyone else's other half poo-pick??
- By Fillis Date 10.09.03 21:35 UTC
mine does (bless him) :D
- By hairy hound [gb] Date 10.09.03 23:17 UTC
My Pup is 11 mths old and hubby has picked poo up TWICE ! both times when out walking alone with him so no alternative all other times if I am there or it is at home it is MY job!! dont know how trhis came to be the unwritten rule but it is!
- By jacki [gb] Date 10.09.03 23:30 UTC
my other half doesn't, he says its my profession cos i pick poo up all day at work, at home its put in scented bag and in wheelie bin too
- By Fillis Date 10.09.03 23:36 UTC
Reminds me of a story (supposed to be true) The man of the house was walking the puppy and it pooed on someones front lawn. Of course the owner of the house was looking out of the window and of course, being a man he had no bags, tissues etc. All he had was a £5 note...and yes, he used that! He reported afterwards that as it was a nice firm small poo he was able to slip it on and off easily....and still spend the money!!!! :D :D :D
- By Steph33 [fr] Date 12.09.03 06:53 UTC
AHH GROSS !!! Typical man tho, spending the money afterwards :D :D
- By LJS Date 11.09.03 08:05 UTC
Yes we are a family of poo pickers!:)
- By gundogsrbest [gb] Date 11.09.03 08:25 UTC
i pay my 10 year old sister to pick up the poo, she gets a pound aday to clean up after my three she puts it in nappy sacks then in the wheelie bin.
After enquiring about a larger bin at work we were disgusted to hear that some people pick the mess up and put it in the bin loose yuk :( , we were asked if we could double wrap the mess to prevent it from getting stuck to the machinery as it the cleaning up afterwards that the bin men dont like, cant blame them really
- By digger [gb] Date 27.09.03 19:11 UTC
I bag it an bin it too - one bag on the right hand, recepticle bag held in the left - when finished full bag goes in the 'picker' bag and the picker bag is then tied TIGHT and binned! Having some building work done soon - and downstairs loo installed, so dreaming of the day I can put it down my new manhole cover :)

And no - the males in the house don't 'DO' Poo Patrols! Fair enough though - they are 'my dogs' (until somebody wants a cuddle..........)
- By crazyspaniel [gb] Date 11.09.03 11:08 UTC
I think I will just sell the poo bin on e-bay, thanks for the tips. One handy way of making sure nobody reads you bank statements and private mail (always seeing the warnings on watchdog) is to put them into a carrier bag and then head off round the garden doing your daily poo collecting - I lift with a nappy bag and drop into shopping bag, this way no burglar in their right mind is going to try and read your mail and you save yourself the cost of one of those shredders. My husband does not pick up "dog eggs", if I go away for the weekend I come home to quite a job.

My last council used to allow it - properly bagged of course (which meant at least two layers) - probably best to check with your local environmental health bods.
- By FrankieB [gb] Date 28.09.03 00:02 UTC
I bag it and bin it. During the summer it began to pong a bit though (even baggged up in the bin—well it was very hot sometimes), so as I live quite near the park (and their bins are cleared daily) I used to carry their daily offerings and put it in their bins!

Now that its cooler I can leave it for a day and pick up any large quantities using plastic disposable gloves and then bin it (its amazing how much poo 2 cockers produce sometimes).
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 28.09.03 08:07 UTC
I am sure people don't worry about putting babies nappies in the bin (wrapped or not), but it was my understanding that it was supposed to be double wrapped. I use scented nappy bags, I can get 300 for a £1 and you can use them liberally (one over your hand and another one to pick with!). I hesitate to say they smell nice!

I am sure any disposal of poo in a bin is better than the alternative of leaving it on the floor!
