Is it possible to change the KC name when you register the pup in your name. Obviously I would still keep the affix, but I am not keen on the reg. name. I saw someone on the net who had a dog with reg name, then she sold it and I found the new owners site and the reg name of that dog was completely different apart from the affix.

It is possible unless the breeder has endorsed the registration with "name unchangeable".

In 30 years of showing I've never come across this 'endorsement' before. I have only ever been aware of the ones, progeny not for registration, and not for export pedigree.
I would have said that no, you can not change a puppy's name except by adding your own affix.
When did name unchangeable come about Tohme?

Hi Dawn,

There used to be 4 endorsements available - the export/breeding two we have now, plus 'name unchangeable' and, I think, 'not eligible for exhibition'. Not all that long ago, as I bought a Collie bitch endorsed as name unchangeable in 1987, although breeder lifted it for me.

Think the original poster will find a form on the KC website for change of name, although breeder will have to agree to the change. I do know someone who has done this in the last year or so, so assume the option is still available. In the instance I know, she has also been able to add her affix.

You can change the name only for one of the following reasons
1.The breeder misspelt the name
2.The breeder did not specify the name requested by the owner
3.The breeder did not give an alternative name & initial the box to prevent the KC selecting a name
4.The KC choice of name is not considered acceptable

Details of the form & a pdf copy are on the KC site

Name unchangeable-ie to prevent an affix being added has been there for as long as I remember

Name unchangeable's not there now though (did just check KC form to make sure I wasn't imagining it) - can't remember when they changed that.

Found the amendment it changed when they brought in the being able to change the dog's name other than adding an affix which was a couple of years ago

Thanks, I'll ask her breeder if she approves, have found the form.

Up to a few years ago there was also name unchangeable, and not for show. They reduced it to just the two with different letters now. I know a name can be changed, but I thought it was only the br3eder that could do it. I would be most annoyed if people could just change the names of pups I had bred and paid to register.

I thought that too. I spend hours choosing our puppies' names - I certainly wouldn't want those names changed just because the new owner didn't happen to like them & I'm pretty sure the KC wouldn't allow a change of name in those circumstances.

You can now change a name the KC has two forms one for changing the name by adding Affix/suffix the other is changing the compleat name.
Go to there web site all forms can be downloaded from therte site.
The only way you would not be able to change a name is if the dog had won his/her stud book number then you can change it.

So anyone could change a KC name that I gave to a dog!!!!!!! That's ridiculous and I can't spell. I always give my dogs Spanish names, well nearly always and I'd hate for them to have an English name.
- By amberjade [gb] Date 09.09.03 19:56 UTC
the breeder we got our dog from let the kennel club name the puppies and lets just say i fell in love with the puppy before i knew her kennel name which is awful

Iv'e had a look at the form for change of name, on the KC site, and as Moonmaiden says there are only a few circumstances that should allow a new name to be granted. I wonder though whether or not the £30 fee would sway the KC to give way more often???

I've just been onto the KC as the name given to my new little bitch is a real mouthful, and with my affix added is too much for most Canine Societies to deal with. I didn't want to upset the breeder (a novice), but she just didn't realise how often I have to write the registered name down!

The person I spoke to was very helpful.

They have also given her an affix with 'x' on the end of it, which also looks ridiculous!

I shouldn't think you could change the affix though. It would be hard to then recognise who bred the dog.

Hiya
The breeder has to sign the form, you can't just change it without the breeder's permission. I have my breeders permission. I wouldn't do it if she didn't agree.
