Don't want to alarm you but if this sudden and frequent I would keep an eye on this. My dog started doing this - I then realised he had mange and was trying to relieve it. Check her ears for signs of flakiness, for example.

if your dog never goes near where foxs walk then you have no need for concern, and ears aint gnna tell you if they have mange, check coat for hair loss and redness of skin, also check for a nasty smell

Thumper - I really do not want to worry you. Lots of dogs rub their own backs out of pleasure- mine just isn't this type of dog and you mentioned your dog had just started to do this quite often. :).
I apologise if I have made you worried about the rubbing - do a search for "mange" posts on CD as there are several good ones listing the symptoms, and "flaky ears" ARE one early sign of mange.

To be specific about the "smell" referred to in the above post, it is "strong and mousey".

Regards
Cissy :)

flakey ears are a sign of many problems ear mites being the biggest, most dogs that have mange will already be past the flaking ear stage by the time you notice what they have.Best bet is if you ever see any discharge or flakeness of ears is to get vet to check it out, but the best and earleist way of checking for mange IS hair loss as this is the first process mange makes once it has made contact with dogs skins.

my pup had sarcoptic mange when we got him mainly due to him living in an area surrounded by foxes etc, he was incredibly itchy and had flaky ears and back but NO hair loss when skin scrapes were taken sarcoptic mange was diagonosed and jack ws treated for it and made a quick recovery, as i let the breeder know so she could take precautions with her other dogs, she felt terrible that the pups had mange, but because of the area she lives in it couldnt be helped.
all three of my dogs like to roll on to their backs and have a good scratch making all the noise possible our old cat used to do the same :)

Thumper - again I apologise for the unintended escalation of my suggestion to "keep an eye out" into a mange issue.
I'm not a vet and do not propose to debate the order of manifested mange symptoms with ripnwoody who looking at the crudity of his other posts appears to be suffering some kind of psychosexual delusions.

BTW Gundogsrbest - this is what my dog experienced also.

dont worry yet mine does it all the time its just a itch , give her a good flea shampoo wash and check her skin isent red and just keep your eye on her .
but if her skin starts looking red/flakey then take her to be checked out.

I have had several dogs who like to roll and wriggle on their backs purely for the pleasure of it. It makes them feel good, it's as simple as that.

Hi Thumper
I've got a little Jacky too, mine's 14 months now and he also likes to lay and rub his back against any surface really. I wasn't too concerned until I noticed he was loosing his fur. I took him to the vets who could find nothing wrong him at all. His fur is starting to regrow now, so am not too concerned.
Good luck with yours :)
