I have just taken Callum to the vets to have a Tardac injection because Buffy is in season and i nearly fainted at the cost of it, £54.00 in total that will teach me to have a big gsd as they do it on the weight of your dog, and it may not even work on him, it amazes me how much they charge for drugs these days.

my vet tells me that they haven't used tardak in years and that they will only castrate finn or spay ebbie, neither are options i want to do, being two cockers - with lovely coats and temperaments - why should i? Looks like i'll be trying to get finn looked after when ebbie is next in season :(

ps i like my vets most of the time but feel he is unreasonable over this - too many people on here recommend it/use it for it not to have been used for 10 years????? I told him i'd been told by breeders to have this done but to no avail.

When i asked my vet about it for one of my Bulldogs he said it would be cheaper and much better to castrate him as the jabs have to be done every three weeks and it wont/or might not work in that space of time so i had him cut.

What is it with vets these days, what happened to the idea of customer service. If I ask my vet for a tardac injection I expect to get one.

It does depend on the weight of the dog, I had my two males done last friday and it cost £52.47, they are Border Terriers.

I had a schipperke done 5 wks ago at a cost of £10.52 he weighs 7.5kg and was given 1.5ml the effects are still present and generally the vet expects it to last him 6 wks, thereby hopefully getting him thru the worst weeks of 3 inseason bitches.

I know Jackie - surely if there are many people recommending something then it still must be in use but i felt a right fool when he said it hadn't been used for 10 years and that he would only castrate finn, told him no to that so he then started to pick on ebbie (who was the one being seen by the vet) saying that if i had no intention of breeding her again to spay her as she is gonna get this and that and make her life hell!!!!!!

As it happens i may well want to breed her again one day, but even if i didn't its still my choice not to have her spayed, like i said before though i like my vets for other things, puppy care, prices, locality etc etc and he is a really good vet - most of the time lol. He definitely did not like me saying no to the neutering. Maybe i should ring round the other vets in the area and find out if they do them, but i would only want them to do that and not be a regular so to speak - dilemmas - who needs em lol

ive mentioned this b4 but i feel sorry for the older people who get taken on by vets. a lady last week was telling me her cat had to have 2 teeth taken out and some anti biotics , total cost £254. my cocker had a booster and i asked for some more ear drops , vet asked if she shook her head yes we replied . ok and she handed them over , £34 i think it cost for the ear drops alone she never even looked at her ears. they always ask for re visits too dont they;) i wonder why , cant they just say if she/hes not better bring him/her back ;) ohh no i wonder why. ill tell ya why because my vet needs to pay for that new merc hes been driving about in:D a very ritch man indeed!

Hello

We took on another dog over the weekend and he had a Tardak injection today (he wieghed 100Lbs) and we were charged £25.

Which i found quite reasonable , we have no plans to castrate at present , we are waiting to see if the injection works first.

why are you lot useing this,it just when the bitch are in season or other reasons,if the dog as this injection what are the side affects if over use,is it a short term thing while the girls are in season and hope to use the dog later at stud if you are not planing castrating, not all injection have the same affect each dog is different,
i have been very lucky with my male dogs, they stay with the bitch that in season up to day 10,then she back with them on day 19 telling them off.i had more trouble when she use to go to my mum to stay,i would go over and see and walk her then come back with the smell on me that when i had trouble.now we got a good routine the dogs, they do not go off they food or figth over each other, and the other bitches are with the males as a decory.from the one that in season.

Well can't speak for others but mainly so the dogs remain reasonably relaxed while bitches are in season.

I have had cause to use it on a regular basis too, my castrated dog developed feminisation syndrome as he got older and that not only caused all the other dogs, including bitches, to jump on him all the time but also caused the males to be irritable with one another and to go of their food. It does not appear to have had any long term effect.

i have heard about castrated dog developing the feminisation syndrom and beacuse what you have said about the other dog reaction to him,did his temperment change for the worse beacuse of them jumping on him, were i do know of other dogs that after castration their temp change for the worse beacuse of other dog reaction.

so there for and agaist for very thing in life.

Hi

I decided to use it as this dog we took in , is over sexed ! and castrating him at the moment is NOT an option.

When you have a dog that is over or just about 7 stones trying to mount you , and your other dogs WHO ARE NOT IN SEASON (two of which are male dogs ! and he is trying to do it to them also.)

We and the vet agreed that the jab other than castration was the only option for him (we have decided we will NOT castrate him)

I realize that there are other things that can be done with him , but castration is not one of them.
