Hi,
we gave our 5 month old lab his worming tablets on Friday, he's been fine but has just been sick and is now looking very sorry for himself :(
Could it be related - it was Drontol and the vets checked his weight to make sure he got the right amount.
thanks

Three out of my six are sick if I use Drontal.so it could be.

Thanks Diane - I've noticed that the holly trees we have are starting to get berries and I've checked and found out that they are poisonous - we are now moving them (fortunately in plant pots). He's seemed really off-colour today but perked up a bit now.

Any worm tablet can cause sickness if the dog has a delicate stomach.
As far as poison berries are concerned, yes, it pays to be careful but most dogs seem to know what they can eat and what to leave alone. There is a holly next door to me and berries drop on my side but I've never had a dog, even as a young puppy, pick one up.

Hi Tyler,
I am just cathing up with all the threads on here and have posted in another section about my Labrador (1 yr old). I adopted her 3 months ago and gave her Drontal for the first time on Saturday. She has not only been very sick since (not even keeping water down) but also had severe diarrheoa (watery and with blood and mucus). The vet said she had inflammation of the bowel and she agreed it could be due to Drontal. Poppy has been so ill and at one point I thought we were going to lose her. She has had good care from the vet (every day since becoming ill) and today shows good signs of improvement, thank goodness. Almost £100 in vets bills this week, but worth every penny if Poppy gets well again.
(she had no raised temperature and the vet said it was definitely inflammation of the bowel).
I certainly wont be using Drontal ever again.
Take care,
Val

Hi
My 7 week old lab is very ill - he has had tests on liver and tomorrow due for x ray on heart as his stomach is so swollen, he is so out of sorts- just lies there feeling so sorry for himself. My vet was talking to me tonight about having him PTS if there is no improvement by tomorrow and the x ray don't show any thing. I am so sad! After reading this post I'm just wondering whether it was the 7 wk worming tablet as he got ill the following day, maybe it is a inflammed bowell making his stomach swell. Did your dog also have a swollen abdomen? I know I'm not a vet but maybe my vet has missed this as he has only had blood tests so far.

Hell Cambio,
First of all I am so terribly sorry to hear about your puppy and I do hope things improve.I know how sad you are feeling believe me.
I would certainly suspect the worming tablets; many vets seem to want to disregard the damage they can possibly do to some dogs.We nearly lost Poppy, she was so very ill.The vet gave anti inflammatory injections until the sickness stopped, then gave her something to line her stomach and repair it(she was passing blood with watery diarrheao). She improved greatly after the 'lining' medicine but it took a week for her to come through it - a week of extreme anxiety and stress and a lot of discomfort for Poppy. I don't know if your puppy has suffered sickness or diarrheao but if so I would definitely be thinking it was the worming tablets. I would think inflammation could cause swelling, but obviously I dont know for sure. Its difficult to say if there was swelling with Poppy as she is quite plump (a bit overweight in fact although she lost a lot of weight during those days of illness). Thankfully she is now fully fit again.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your puppy. I do hope he picks up and things look bright again. It's quite amazing how quickly they can pull through so please don't give up hope. Please keep us posted; I'm sure everyone will be sending love and prayers to you both.
Lots of luck, and love

If it was the worming tablets I would have expected your dog to be sick much sooner, all wormers can make dogs sick but this happens normally with in hours not days. I personally do not think it was the tablets given the time scale involved.
i agree with wistleblower, if it was the wormer the pup would have been sick within a few hours. i don't use drontal as it was making mine sick i use panacur wormer

I picked up some worming tablets at the vets yesterday while I was there for my dogs booster. He always used to use Drontal but I see he has changed this thime to Milbemax, has anyone heard of it? He said it was concentrated and only needed one tablet for my 15kg dog and one for my 26kg dog.
I haven't given them yet, only because I thought it might be to much for the system with the booster on the same day. This is starting making me think.
Regards
Sandra
it is a new brand of wormer. my vet tried to get me to buy it but i stick with the panacur.

Hmmm, Poppy was ill a couple of days later, not straight away and I've noticed others had the same experience. In fact she was a bit hyper for two days after the Drontal, but then fell very ill. No fever, just inflammation to her bowel etc. I was so scared when I saw what was coming away from her - the vet said it was the lining of her gut. The whole thing was a really distressing experience.
Drontal have said that some dogs do have this allergic reaction. I only wish they said so on the packet and our vets told us this!
I hope the little puppy is ok.
Best wishes,
Val

Is this just a problem with Drontal or do other wormers cause sickness too?

Hello Rosemarie,
I'm sorry I can't answer that although I did read somewhere on this board, in another thread, that an alternative had caused similar problems :-( I'm sure that many dogs are unaffected and fine but for those of us who have seen our poor dogs suffer terribly it is really a big worry. I wish it was easy to find out more about these things. We all innocently do 'whats best' for our beloved animals but can so easily end up making them very ill.
Poppy is coming up for her booster jabs at the end of this month and having read various negative things about them I am of course in two minds! I know it's a controversial topic but I just wish there could be some clear (and honest) info available about this also.
Take care,
Val :-)

Hi again Rosemary,
Panacur was the other name of wormer tablets. Just saw it in a post a few back from ours, but did read somewhere else on this board that some dogs have problems with those also :-( Suppose its a case of trial and error, but what a price to pay if it goes wrong.
Best wishes,
Val
