Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / devastated at loss of our Rott..

Has anyone any similar experience of a sudden death occuring in their young rottweiler. On Monday we had a fit, healthy, bouncing two and a half year old dog. We live on a farm (no crops), and on Monday evening heard 'Ria' yelp, whilst we were busy in the stables. It was dark and we couldn't see what was there, but on examination of the dog, no evidence of a bite or bleeding and thought maybe the cat had scratched her and ran off. The dog was fine after
that, so we were not concerned. Next morning my dog could not stand up properly and was slavering alot, she just looked so ill, we couldn't think what was wrong. We rushed her to our vet. They kept her in and I got a call to say she had a gastric problem and was on fluids, but her temp and heart rate we raging. By Thursday morning the vet called and to our relief, we could collect Ria that afternoon.

My husband then got a call at 2pm to say the dog had deteriated and we could go to see her. She collapsed when she saw us and it was just so horrible to see. The vet was at a loss as to what was wrong with Ria, having already done bloods eetc. was to do some more and put Ria back onto a drip. Sadly, 6pm that day we got a call to say Ria had died and we are in total shock. What can have killed our lovely fit healthy dog so rapidly.

The vets are doing a post mortem, querying poison, snakebite or liver disease. Whatever has happened has attacked Rias liver aggresively with toxins and she didn't have a chance.

We are so upset and shocked and if anyone has any similar experience or ideas, could you share them. Thanks - Michelle & Paul

Michelle and Paul. I am so very sorry to hear of your loss.
I lost my baby cocker at 2 and half years as well, she died of a neurological diseas. I know how hard it is. It is worse as they had such a short lived life. All I can say is is gets easier in time. You have the lovely memories of her and thats what keeps you going.

My thoughts are with you.
God bless
steph

I'm sorry to hear of your loss too. It does sound like some sort of poisoning for her to go down hill so far.
Having lost a young bitch myself at 8 months old, possibly some sort of poisoning, I know just how bad it feels.
Please keep us posted.

Sorry to hear of your loss, I hope you find out what happened soon, the yelp makes me think maybe she was bitten by something?
