Topic Other Boards / Foo / I am puzzled about 'Pop-ups'
- By Harry C. [gb] Date 05.09.03 18:51 UTC
If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
My computer is protected with Norton System Works and Norton's Firewall, but all the time that I am logged onto the internet, at about 5 minute intervals, I get a message saying: "a remote system is attempting to access 'eEBSVC.exe' on your computer"
Norton tells me that the Threat Level is a - Medium Risk, and asks if I want to block this access. So far I have always 'blocked' this access.
How can I find out who or what is trying to access my 'eEBSVC.exe'. (Whatever eEBSVC.exe is ?)
Should I continue to block it each time it tries to gain access?
Should I 'permanently' block it from gaining access?
Or should I allow access?
Help!!!!!!
a worried,
Harry C.

personally i would permanently block it just to be on the safe side, someone with a bit more knowledge should be along soon :)

Do you currently have a Larvasoft product installed such as Ad-aware6? eEBSVC.exe is program that can be accessed via a remote machine/server for product feedback. Most likely it is only monitoring your Internet access and specific program usage (i.e. Ad-aware6). I suppose you could say that it is a form of spy-ware as the program doesn’t let you know exactly what it doing/sending. I would recommend blocking its access unless you don’t mind being a guinea pig.

Thanks Jacki and Charlie24,
I am not aware of having any 'Lavasoft' programs installed on my computer, but if by allowing access to this mystical 'eEBSVC.exe' on my computer lets someone get into my computer, I find that a bit worrying.
I think I will just keep on blocking access each time manually for the time being, while I try to get in touch with Nortons and ask them to clarify what is going on.
Thanks again for you help. It is nice to have this bit of the board to ask questions unrelated to dogs.
Best wishes,
Harry C.

I bet you have an EPSON printer?
How did I know that ? I have one and get the same message from my firewall.
Upto now I have denied it access as I can't seem to find much about the eEBSvc.exe that is being contacted.
I'm just on my way to the EPSON website to see if I can unearth anything there.
Keep ya posted!
Bluey.

I contacted Espon because I started getting this from Norton as well - here's what they said.
The eEBSVC.exe program pings all available ports on behalf of Status Monitor looking for attached printers to monitor. Firewalls can mistake this as evidence of programs trying to contact external PC's. It is safe to either block or allow access to this
eEBSVC.exe is a Bi-directional module used to enable communication over a network between your printer and PC.
If you are using the printer locally via USB or parallel, you can configure your firewall to block the traffic
being sent by this module or you can simply search for eEBSVC.exe and delete the file.
If deleting the file remember that in order to have Bi-Directional communication over a network you must reinstall the driver.

I know this is an old message so you may already have this info.

Hi tbyrd2000,
Thanks for the info on eEBSVC.exe.  Yes, I have 3 Epson printers connected to my PC.
For the past few weeks I have not been getting the warning messages from Nortons Firewall, maybe they have given up trying to monitor my computer because I kept blocking every access request.
Thanks again,
Best wishes,
Harry C.

Oh Dear John,
At your age it is better that you stick with the 'HIC's' and give up on the fried breakfasts.
Take care John.
Just think - If you were a dog they would have one hell of a job finding a new home for you, its always harder the get homes for the 'older' dog.  (Especially if you HIC after a 'breakfast')

If I were a dog than I would have put me down Harry!

By the way, I would download "Adaware" by Lavasoft. it's free and it's good at finding dodgy cookies on your machine. I run it a couple of times a week and it always seems to find something i've picked up. Put it into Google and you will find a site to download it from.

Best wishes, John
