i have had a rotty since last november and she means the world to both my wife and i.
we took advantage of the free cover provided by the KC.
the cover was from E&L insurance.
my puppy, 'womble' has had a few knocks that have required vet treatment and the insurers have paid up within a reasonable time.
however, on the 19 JULY this year my puppy had to have emergency treatment due to gastric dilation. my wife contacted E&L to ask if the treatment would be covered. they said 'yes, go right ahead'
womble recieved her treatment and has made a full recovery.
the bill was £934. paid in full the next day by my wife.
i sent off full details of the costs and operation, signed by the vet to E&L a few days later.
they sent me back a letter saying that womble will not be covered for GD any longer. fair enough i thought.
and that's it.
nothing else.
waited a few weeks, got in touch with E&L. they said that the claim has been approved and it is now in processing. i should just wait for the settlement which will be sent to me.
i have rang them on many occasions now and the reply is the same.
my wife rang and was given the number of the insurance ombudsman if she was'nt happy with their practices and the address (no phone number) of the complaints dept.
we can survive without the £934, but there are MANY people who would be in real financial dire straits at this point.
i am not expressing any views about E&L and i am still insuring my puppy with them, for reasons i'm sure you can figure out. if anyone would like to hear about what settlement they offer me, let me know and i'll post it when it finally arrives. in the meantime please feel free to direct anyone looking for CHEAP insurance to this post.
a thousand thanks for your time

I have never heard of E & L what does it stand for, I take it they dont insure for life, as a matter of interest what was your monthly payment to them.

FYI
E&L stands for equine and livestock
how this company which now insures anything you care to mention has managed to keep a reputation is beyond me.
all i can assume is that the insurance ombudsman is a fairly toothless orginisation
thanks

are you sure its not "Expensve & Loadacrap" ? :D
lol

If you use the search facility here on the Forum and type in INSURANCE you will find a number of threads ..most if not all contain warnings about E&L :(

Ooooh.I Hate E&L. Hate them! Awful insurance company. Due to being a vet nurse, have had to deal with lots of very unhappy patients who had this mis-fortune to be a member of E&L and it was not good. I cannot think of 1 good thing to say about them.
Gotta say that my sister-in-law has always used Petplan, expensive, but she's been in (or her dogs have) the unfortunate situation whereby she's had to use them quite often, they've always paid out promptly, I use 'more than' for my youngest, and they have also been very good. There are so many insurers out there offering cover, but ALWAYS read the small print, I hope the original poster receives their settlement soon.
liberty
Some friends of mine were also insured with them, with their horses.
They have now stopped and gone with a different insurance co.
The horrifiying discovery for them was that one of their horses who
they thought was insured....wasn't they'd never actioned the policy :o
even though they'd sent them policy documents??
ALWAYS also listen to your vets as they also have experience of who
are good pet insurance co's - mine also don't recommend them........
Oh Dear, another person in the same boat as me........:-(
I have to say, that this bunch of cowboys, are a joke, not an insurance company...
If you type Insurance in the ''search option'', you can go back and read my ongoing fight with them....
They have just recently paid up for one of my dogs, after an 11 week wait, and that is only because I told them, they would be hearing from my solicitor..... they won't let you speak to the manager, he is ''never available''......., my vet has had argument after argument with them, over my account. Between me and my breeder, we have 7 dogs insured with them, but I tell you now, it will only be until the policies need renewing, and then will be moving, because the other thing is, if you try to cancel your policy with them, before the end of its term, they will slap a cancellation fee on you, that is usually more than the amount that you owe in premiums........
I have reported them to the Insurance Ombudsman, and am currently awaiting a reply..
They are definetely one company, to steer clear of.....
Hope you manage to get it sorted quickly, £934 is a lot of money to be without,
Good Luck,
Gabrielle :-)

I did have e&l for a while but thankfully after reading this I did not have to claim whilst I had them. One thing I did learn from insurance that I would never take out an insurance with a capping limit again. I always now have unlimited claim amount. Unfortunately my Lab bracken got bone cancer, I decided I had to give her every chance even though it mean't removing her leg and most of her hip. I am happy to say that the operation was a success and although she was only given 6 months after the operation over 2 years later she is still happily running around. But my point was that at that time she was insured for £5000 for any one condition which I thought would be plenty, but the £5000 was reduced to £4250 0nce my percentage had been paid and as the whole lot with hospital stay, chemotherapy and the operation came to over £7000 I was out of pocket more than I expected. Plus it is ongoing every three months for check up xrays etc. (but she is worth every penny).

I was searching the web for others that have problems with E & L and came across your posting. About 2 years ago we took out pet insurance with Animal Friends Insurance for our dog Skip. The underwriters at the time were IGI. In July 2003 we were informed that the underwriters were changing to E & L and that the direct debit needed to be changed. In August 2003 Skip developed a nose bleed and we took him to our vet. He was referred to a specialist in Bedfordshire and diagnosed with a possible tumor. He has been in for further investigation and an operation and thankfully it is only polypoid rhinitis. He is recovering at the moment. This week E & L have infomed me that they are not liable for the condition as symptoms (sneezing) were present before July according to the vets referral sheet. I am now going to have to fight this at a time when my wife is 7 months pregnant and under extreme stress due to Skip's condition. My wife has spoken to the Insurance Ombudsman and has been informed that we have a strong case against E & L. The vet's bill at the moment is around £3000.

I read a newspaper article recently about pet insurance - the conclusion being you get what you pay for! Pet plan may be a bit more expensive but they do insure for life, which many others don't. Personally I hate E+L bad experience with my horse insurance.

Hi, just wondering if you have received your money. Mine is relating to a cat, had urinary tract disease have said they will exclude him if it reoccurs which I know but still waiting for them to pay for this lot of treatment.
Oh dear :( Are they realy that bad? I have been useing them for a while now because they give 16wks when the pups leave home. I have also told people that they are good, based mainly on a friends experience... when her Lab had bloat they paid out immediately. Looking at all your negative posts would you recommend going back to Petplan for pups leaving home??
