Hi
Can anyone tell me the general age for castration. We have a male ESS who is 9&1/2 years old. He is kept as an outside farm dog/guard dog. so is fairly grouchy to strangers. Is he to old to be done? I only ask as we have had 1 litter and really do not want another. i was planning to get my bitch speyed, but my mother in law has now decided to keep a bitch pup from the litter and she lives on the same land as us. Money is not really an issue as i belive speying can be a good thing for bitches, but if we can get our boy done rather than both girls would this not be best??

No he's not too old to be done Brinny. There are lots of dogs castrated later in life for one reason or another - prostate problems is a common one. Just remember he'll still have his urges.

Not to bothered about the urges as long as there are no more accidents, i dont think i could handle going through this again!!!!!!!

Interestingly I've just found this site: http://www.vetcontact.com/en/art.php?a=29&t=aktuell which reports that castrated dogs had a higher incidence of prostate cancer than uncastrated dogs.......

Apparently true digger, and, not surprisingly in this current "chop-em-off" era, it is swept under the carpet.
