Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Leaving my Puppy in Kennels

Hi
We are going on hols for 4 nights and are leaving our 7 month old Lab puppy in kennels. He has stayed there for 1 night last week and did not get on too well. He wouldnt go out of his kennel to go toilet, so he ended up messing in his basket and kennel and then fretting all night. The lady at the Kennels was really nice (as were the kennels) and said he was no problem, she recomended leaving him there a night at a time so he gets used to it for future times.
I am now concerned that when he is in kennels for his 4 night stay he will really get in a panic. Is there anything I can do to make his stay less traumatic for him as im really worried.
Any advise would be gratefully received!!

Jane

You are doing it right and you said that the owner is nice well he will be fine they will make him feel at home and once he knows there is food around he will start to come around.

Oh god im feeling guilty again about leaving Mr B in kennels. I keep refering to it as his holiday but i still feel guilty. Im also leaving my eight year old (not in kennels though).

Hi Jane.
Don't worry, many dogs behave strangely the first time they go in kennels. For a first stay, we always reccommend a Sat-Mon stay, not one night, it isn't long enough for a young dog to know where it is. I'm sure he will be fine after a couple of days and you will return to a happy boy!
Dawn.

I put one of mine in kennels once.We were allowed to take her bed and toys so that she had familiar things from home with her.Apart from the first night when she cried for a bit she was fine after that

No i bottled last night i cant do it. I cant put him in kennels hes to young. I would not enjoy my holiday because i would be worried so my brother is staying at my house and my partners brother is going to go round during the day and so is my mother and 8 year old.

I think if you've got family that are willing to chip in and help then you're very lucky and it will be best not to disrupt the .

We've only just got ours, but we 've already made arrangements that when we go away she will stay with my parents. They live 200 miles away but at least she'll be with people she knows and who love her (they only just moved so she's already known them a while) and where we won't have to worry.

unfortunatlry not everyone's as lucky. Have a great time your boy will be fine!

Claire you are so right. Im a born worrier and was having sleepless night the guilt was getting overwhelming. There was nothing wrong with the kennels they are excellent. Its just my holiday was sprung on me for my 30th where im meeting all my partners spanish relatives for the first time at his cousins wedding.
So if i sit there with a face like a wet weekend because im worried about Mr B it would go down like a pork pie in a mosc
