Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Bichon Frise won't come.

Hi
I have two nearly 11 week old bichons. One comes when i call her almost without fail and is sitting on command. The other pup ignores me completely when I call her name and say "come" even when I use treats to lure her. I use the same excited high-pitched tone for both and spend a little time training with each of them separately every day. The ignorer is deffinitely not deaf! She just sits and looks at me. She does like treats but I just feel like she recognises that this is training and is completely stubborn that I will not get her to do anything that she doesn't want to.

Can anyone help please? I have Gwen Bailey's book and am using her methods to no avail.

Hi Gee try calling her for food, grooming or anything she likes and dont give her it if she dosent come first. Maybe when she sees the other one running and having attention/walks/treats she'll twig faster!:)

Some dogs need a little more than just a 'squeaky weaky' voice - try getting down (as far as you can) to her level, don't look directly at her though (this can be perceived by a dog as being confrontational), open your arms, alternatly pat the ground infront of you.......... show her the treat in your hand (if she's close enough let her smell and taste it.......) You might need to start of with just a short distance between you and teach her what happens when she comes to you - dog's don't automatically know that when you call their names they are supposed to come :(

Hi, I just had to reply to this issue with your Bichon. I have a 1 and a half year old and believe me when they want to be stubborn they are!!!. She is really good, sits, etc but she is the same when it comes to being called, she ignores me!!!. The best thing I have learnt to do is when you go for a walk etc just carry on walking and she will follow, they are very close to their owners and won't let you out of their site. My Mum once said that it's like they are in a world of their own!!

They are so cute though but very snooty and it's like it's beyond them to be told what to do. Apart from that they are the most loving breed of dog you could have!

Good Luck
