We have got a 2 1/2 yr old male gsd, lurcher, boxer cross who has been nueted(we rescued him a year ago). And 3 mths ago we rescued a staffy, lurcher cross male dog, who has also been nueted(he is now 8/9mths old). Do you think with careful supervision these two, who get on very well at the moment will continue to. We are hearing conflicting views from poeple saying there should be know problems with two males, to never put two males together. Please advise, thanks.

Hiya,
Gosh I hope that you don't as I've already got a male Golden retreiver and I'm getting a male Great Dane puppy in 5 weeks time.
I looked into both the dog and bitch possibilities and we were advised, by many different breeders, that as Baillie is not territorial or dominant in any way, that he would accept any sex puppy. He's great around other dogs, not fussy as to what sex they are at all, a quick sniff - he's quite disinterested actually :)
But as we've never had a bitch before, we opted for the male puppy, now after reading a few recent postings - I hope I haven't set myself up for a fall. But I think, as with everything else, common sense should prevail and as long as a situation where a fight could arise, is avoided, you should be okay. I hope that's right!! I'm sure if it isn't someone will be along very shortly to put me right!!! Good Luck

I have a male staff and 2 male elkhounds at present who get on great together.I also have a pup booked for a couple of months time-also male!!!There are breeds where 2 males should not be kept together but personally I would rather have 2 males than a male and a female and have to worry about pups.

What do you think is the ideal age gap between dogs when the owner goes from first dog to another pup? Just being nosey here.
I dont really know, but our decision to get our second rescue dog came when our first, who was 18 mths when we got him, was just over 2yrs. By this time he had well and truly settled into our house and routine and was well trained in the basics, and with the aid of a halti walked well on the lead. I am glad that we have got 2 and I'm equally glad that we waited until the first was trained etc. That is just my opinion and I very much doulbt that there is any wrong or right time to take on 2 or more dogs, as long as they are well suited breed and temparment wise and you can cope and give them all the love and attention they require.
We have a dog and bitch (both aged 5) and are planning a puppy soon. We have decided on a dog pup as Dylan is very laid back, Honey (our bitch) can be very strong willed and pushy with other bitches. You just have to go with what is right for your household, it's all in the training!

Based on my own and the breeds I am most familiar with I would say two years, and ideally three. You then hopefully have a reliable well trained adult who will only need to be kept ticking over with it's training giving you time to concentrate on the pup, and also setting a positive role model for the younger dog.

Hi Guys,
Just a quick question re the age gap thing - Baillie was 6 past in March - I'm not expecting too much from him to accept a puppy at that age am I - I have looked into getting a puppy for months - but I think now that he's been born and I can bring him home in 5 weeks - all the little negative thoughts are creeping in with regards to Baillie - I'm so excited about getting the puppy but at the same time I must admit to feeling a little like I'm betraying Baillie - Is this normal?

Hiya - How are you?
I hope so - it's a strange feeling - I do feel like somehow I'm being disloyal to him! But I'll look on the positives and think of all the fun they'll have together :)
As far as names go - No.... Drey, Alfie, Floyd, Diesel and a hundred others
:)
We're going to go down on wednesday and see him - he'll be four weeks old - so hoping something will just suit him!
But I'll be sure to let you know.
Sharon
