Topic Dog Boards / Health / Limp Tail??
- By Patches [gb] Date 01.09.03 14:09 UTC
Hi, does anyone know if when a puppy the dogs tail is normally limp? I have a 9 week old retiever and his tail is straight for about 2/3"from his body and then it just drops straight to the floor. Its OK when he is wagging his tail, it sticks in the air as normal but at other times it hangs vertical half way down? I cant remember my gsd having a 'limp' tail at that age.Is it normal and do they develop??

Does he know if you touch it? Think I would have a vet look to be on the safe side.

He may well od damaged it, and it is bruised. They usually right themselves in a few days, but I would check with your vet just in case.

Hi,

Personally I would take him to see a doggie chiropractor, could be he has a problem with his spine that isn't severe enough to cause problems while walking.

Our doggie chiropractor has done wonders for some of our dogs and also friends dogs.

A limp tail is not normal!!

Hi, my dogs get dead tails (sticks out 2 inches then hangs) when they get wet in cold water. It's happened often, is quite common ACD's, and Labs, that I know of. 2 of mine have limp tails at the moment following a river swim at the weekend. Hope it's nothing more serious in your pup.

if you look at many dogs around, this is common.
looks as though it should have been docked there doesnt it??

This is not quite the same as a limp tail, but our pup's tail is completely bent over by about an inch at the end. If you run your hand down her tail you can feel it and it's like someone has bent it at a right-angle. We got the vet to check her over and he said it's probably where the mother has nipped a little too hard (possibly during the birth) and has damaged it. He said that it was not a problem and didn't bother her and would only consider docking if it became a problem for her later in life which he very much dobts.

As your pup is so young could your limp tail maybe be the result of a simlar accident?
