Hi, at this stage if I want to find out I have them palpated by an expreinced vet who can tell if they are preganant but gives no clue as to numbers. If I am going to scan I usually wait til 6-7 weeks as then the view is much clearer and the numbers are more accurate. My vets dont scan til 28 days and at that time the numbers you are told are often not accurate. Often with an early scan you can double the numbers the vet tells you - so it cheaper and less stressful for the bitch to be palpated at this early stage, as all you get really from an early scan is the same info that she is/isn't pregnant. Occasionally an early scan will show no pups, though they are actually pregnant. Sorry dont know any in your area, I'm a long way from you.

There is no hard and fast rule, it depends on the expertise of the scanning operative. We had ours scanned at approximately 5 weeks, the pups were the size of grapes!

hi jackie,i live between lincoln and gainsborough. My vet had a feel last night but thinks that she is holding them up into her ribs,as her rib cage has swelled out so much. Her boobies have turned a dark pink colour and her back 2 have drooped down. She has had a thick gloopy discharge that is a white/cream colour(no green,or smells)for a couple of days last week, but that has gone. This week she is grumpy and eating like a pig.Are these good signs? I may put off scanning for a while as if she has them high up,i have heard that a scan has missed them completely on other bitches. thanks

Have any of you tried a stethoscope?
A Good freind of mine recommended that to me and then sent me one she had the are quite reasonably priced on the net though.
My girl loves lying on her back for a rub so I just listened with a stethoscope and could hear the little heart beats. It was stress free for her but enough for me to know she was in whelp.
You can't tell exactly how many there is with it which some may desire this information but it can give a slight indication if even if only to know there is more than 1, when you move it around your bitches tummy the heart beat is louder when you are near a puppy.
This is something that like anything peice of equipment you need to use carefully on a bitch.

WL,
I can only go with my one and only experince but I am sure it was from about 5 weeks but I never tried it earlier. You can hear it quite well due to the different heart rates from puppies to mother.
The Girl who recommended it to me I believe has used this method successfully for years.

Don't leave. There are a few well-known twits one here unfortunately, but most other people are very pleasant & will offer whatever advice they can.
When opinions differ, it can get a bit warm, but usually its OK.
You'll notice that JG likes her Gin!!!:D
