could anyone offer advice please.

how old is reallly to old to take a dog to training classes.

we have all the basics sit, stay, paw, lie, fetch, recall etc, just want a bit more controll when playing with other dogs, he seems to go deaf!

You cant teach an old dog new tricks :)
Couldnt resist that sorry - I think every dog still has the ability to learn ,no matter what its age especially if you make it fun :)

Up to the day they die of old age. They like us never stop learning what suits them.

Hi raffystaffy,

I had to reply....I was born and grew up in Norton Green!:D and I know Burslem well. Probablly not now - I've not been there for 25 years or more!
Nice to hear from a fellow Stokonian!!:)

In the famouse words of Victor Meldrew, 'I don't believe it!'
I was born in Trentside Road....where did your partner live? There was Cherry Grove and Maple Close.
I moved from there in 1977. I've still got relatives in Brown Edge, Norton, Hanley,

Hi raffy staffy

They're never too old! We took our rescued retriever x at age 8 years. She passed her KC Good Citizen Bronze at 8.5 yrs, her Silver at 9 yrs and just failed her Gold by one element out of the 10 at age 9.5yrs.
I'm training another rescue dog at present and in his class there is an 8 year old rescued lurcher learning for the first time and doing well.

It is never to late, when I decided to teach my one year old springer using clicker training my 13 year old wanted to join in. Sure enough within minutes she had clicker training sussed - she is very greedy so anything for a biscuit. I had basically left her training alone because I thought she was quite content, however she really enjoyed the stimulation and showing the others how it should be done. My advice would be to get cracking with some training, you and your dog can have some fun and that is all that matters.

I took my 11 year old to obedience classes for a few months when she was about 1 and she didn't enjoy it that much she found it a bit boring.

Any way last year my two young girls were in season and I had a litter off one of the, so, to keep me going to obedience I took my old girl Dilita. I said to the trainer ooh, she's done obedience for years can she go in the higher group rather than beginners and she said yes!!:d She didn't do too badly for an old girl. She still does have a go agility when we go to fun shows and she loves it.

I'd say that a dog is never too old as long as their brain and their body is still fit!!
