I appreciate this has probably been raised a million times in the past but I could do with some help.

I have just got a 12 week Cairn and am having a few problems toilet training him. I take him out in the morning and he does nothing, then again at dinner, nothing, then in the evening after his tea and he does nothing. EVERY time I get him back in the house he does it on the floor, whether is be in the living room on the wooden floor or on the lino in the kitchen. Tonight for instance I took him out for over an hour in a hope he would perform so I could praise him to high heaven, he did nothing. I walked straight into the kitchen he squatted when I had my back turned and wee'd all over the place. I didn’t punish him at all or make any fuss or noise I merely picked him up and took him outside again to another non-performance.

Can anyone suggest a way of getting him into the habit of "not in the house please?"

Thanks
Roy

He needs to be taken out about every 45 mins. and on waking, after feeding and after any play session. You do need to stay with him too for however long it takes and praise when he gets it right. The chances are you will have the most success when he has just woken.

Hi Roy,
As Jackie H says, your puppy will no doubt need to go after eating, sleeping and playing. I was given a fact sheet when I got my first pup, which I have now followed with two puppies and had no major problems. Take puppy outside and stay there for 5 mins, if he does nothing, take him back in, then out again ten mins later - and so on - until he performs (not forgetting loads of praise when he does!). Then it's out every 45-60 mins after that.
