We bought a ACA registered Shih Tzu 3 years ago when she was just 3 months old. At 6 months, we had her spayed at a local vet with a very good reputation. Last year we accquired a AKC registered miniature daschund (male). We thought nothing about letting them play together, since the shih tzu was spayed. About an hour ago I went to feed them, and found her in the dog house with 5 puppies. My question is: Is it possible at all for a female dog to become pregnant after being spayed???? And if not, should the vet be held responsible and give free medical care to the mother and puppies, and perform another spaying at no charge. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Ladonna

Hello
All i can say is the spay could not been performed to the correct procedure , or you wouldnt have had any pups in the first place !
I would take this up with the vet who carried out the spay on your little girl , and see what he has to say for himself. I think the vet in question has a lot to answer for !
Anyway , Good Luck with mom and pups :)

Thanks for your reply. Mom and babies seem to be doing really well. We only had 1 scare, and that was that she wouldn't chew the cord on the last baby to free it and the baby started breathing really shallow, but baby is free now and doing good. I agree, the Dr. does have some explaining to do. And hopefully, he will be courteous enough to care for momma and babies for free. I think he should anyway. Again, Thanks

Hi,
No it is not possible for a bitch to have puppies after she is spayed. Spaying removes the ovaries and the uterus, so there is absolutely no possibility of pregancy.
Basically, your vet didn't spay the bitch!

So what did he do to the bitch? i would get him to pay for the care and any treatment BUT I WOULD NOT LET HIM TOUCH MY BITCH OR PUPS.

Thats terrible :(
I would be in touch ASAP and if he has charged you for something he hasnt done I would also report him !!
Imagine if there had been problems with the birth or something had happened to your bitch heaven forbid .

Thanks, I never thought about reporting the vet, but that would be a good idea. Her stay at this animal hospital when she was "spayed" (obviously she wasn't) was very expensive she spent the night and everything. Thanks again for all your help. I'll let you know what happens with the vet. Hopefully the vet doesn't give me any trouble over this, as mad as I am he better not HA! HA!

Just a thought,
Did she have a wound and stitches when she came home from hospital ?? If so what op did she have

?? I am astounded, you would think a vet would get something like this right.

I have heard everything now. I hope you get hold of the vet tomorrow and ask him some questions.
Poor you, mind you it sounds as though you are enjoying your puppies. Hope they continue to do well.

We are really enjoying the puppies. Even though they are a strange mix (shih tuz and miniature dauschand) they are beautiful puppies. Both momma and babies are doing well. My husband is working on a special place for them so they can have some quiet time away from the daddy. Daddy is very proud too. You can tell he knows they are his babies too. It is really amusing.

Yes she had stitches, that's another thing that has us worried, but she had this done 3 yrs. ago and she has done well so far. I'm going to try to get in touch with the vet tomorrow, but there is a slight chance that the office will be closed--- tomorrow is Labor Day. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens.

Be carefull when you approch your vet asked can you have a copy of your bitches record and make sure it has the details of here being spayed.
Has if you try anything you will find that the records will go missing and you will not have a leg to stand on.
Yes your vet has broke the law he has charged you for a service that he has not done .
Has things turned out the bitch and the pups are ok but say if it was not and your girl had problems??
I would sue the pants of them and go public if they have done this to you how many others have this happend to?
In England the cost of spaying is high they taken your money now you have to rear and then find homes for the litter but make sure you have it in black and white on paper that they have done this op on you girl has without prof you have not got a leg to stand on!!!

Hi,
I have worked for several vets in the US over the years and I have seen this happen twice- once a cat and once a dog.
In one case, for whatever reason, the vet only removed one horn of the uterus.(guess he lost count!:O}) and in the second, it was a staff problem, where the dog never actually had the surgery, but was released to the owner. Fortunately, that owner had the sense to call and ask if we had a "new" method of spaying that didn't require an incinsion!
I think your vet will be embarrassed and will be eager to provide a "real" spay for mother AND puppies! At least, that is what we did and seems fair to me. Sometimes things happen.
Unless he gives you grief over the situation, I don't think it is necessary to report the incident to the Board. Especially if you had a previous good relationship. Nothing like having a vet who is greatly motivated to keep you happy!

yeah i think that is true actually i would have thought you should get some evidence of what he has done before anything else like ask for some documents like a receipt once thatis in your hand tell him what he has done because i am sure if you have had a good relationship in the past then i would say if he does act apologetic and is happy to offer you free services then restrain from sueing him and ask him what he has done to your girl whatever it was it wasnt a spay
