Topic Dog Boards / Health / PUPS BEING SICK ***UPDATED***
- By Brinny [gb] Date 26.08.03 08:45 UTC
Hi my pups are now 5 weeks old. They are on 3-4 meals a day with mum intermittently feeding them. But several of them keep being sick. tehy sound like they are coughing/choking then throw up what looks exactly like baby sick, although today ones was a bit more watery. A friend who knows more about pups than me said this is quite normal and that all pups do this due to hair stuck in throat etc. But has anyone else had this or should i be concerned??

ANYONE???

I would advise you to check with your vet - I don't know what area you are in, nor what contact with other dogs your puppies have - but I know several dogs in SE Essex have had kennel cough - and what you are describing sounds, to me, like kennel cough!

Hope it's not though.

The pups have not been in contact with any other dogs, except mum and dad who are also never in contact with other dogs. I have asked about kennel cough but was told that they would have other symptoms aswell and that possibly mum would be showing some signs??

hi brinny how often and when is it after feeding when they get up /run around/mor/afternoon what bedding do you have them on sorry but what breed arethey You can get kennel cough from people walking in and out of your house.

Hi

It does not seem to be at any particular time. They are English Springers, and it is not all of them. I have seen about 3 out of 8 do this so far. It does sond like they are choking, you know when adult dogs get fur balls and are trying to cough them up, it sounds like that and looks exactly like baby sick. milky bits etc/I have got them on vet bed and newspaper, but they have been in a run in my garden over the last few days, so possibly a bit of grass??? I ahve checked their noses and eyes etc and neither look runny/weepy. all are fine and playful no problems going to toilets etc.
- By corso girl [gb] Date 26.08.03 14:06 UTC
Just keep an eye on them are they eating well? if any of the others start then call vet to come and check them i really dont think it is hair balls/fluff just watch for any changes best of luck.
- By Brinny [gb] Date 26.08.03 14:10 UTC
They are all eating fine, and due to be wormed again starting today. do you think i should hold off on worming for now?
- By corso girl [gb] Date 26.08.03 14:20 UTC
I would not worm them for a day or two just yet not until you have got the sickness under control.
- By Brinny [gb] Date 26.08.03 14:40 UTC
Thanks for your help/advice. i think i will keep an eye on them for another day or so then maybe call the vet if it continues

Hi, if you are going to wait and see I would take their temps 3 or 4 times over the next 24 hours - to be sure they are doing ok. I would leave worming them for at least a week after they appear better. Were they ok after their first worming?
- By kennelsitter [gb] Date 26.08.03 17:23 UTC
Dont wont to alarm you but a friend had this problem but with only one pup there is a conditions dont know the name of it? but when the puppy is young they can handle there mothers milk but when put on solids could not digeast the food and brings it up stright after feed!!
Best way is to go to the vets and get them checked over.

Brinny, my friend's young lab has just had kennel cough - and she is never in contact with other dogs - but there is one who has just moved in next door but one - and the vet says that as the virus is airborne, and with the hot, humid weather, the virus could be spread this way. When Mum & Dad go out - are they anywhere near other dogs?

I would still advocate seeing the vet, just to rule KC out!

They were all ok after their first worming at 3 weeks, and it never seems to be the same pup being sick!!! I keep an eye on one that has thrown up a little then they are fine and another has a little go, i am trying to establish if it is after mum has fed them!! They are greedy little things. ie yesterday i fed them at tea time and then mum got in for about 5 mins about 10 mins later, then about 15mins later i picked up one and he threw up what lloked like baby sick. it looks like clotted milk ie little lumps (sorry to be so graffic, i hope you have all had breakfast). And he was one that i have never noticed be sick before(also one of the larger pups) Could it be overfeeding causing this?? Also mum and dad dont leave our land at all. Mum has done previous to having the pups but not since, except trip to the vets.We live on 7 acres that they have the free run of.
- By westie lover [gb] Date 27.08.03 13:25 UTC
I really think a trip to the vet is the best idea as another poster suggested. It could be "overfill" but it could be kennel cough too, or maybe if mum has freerun of the land her undercarraige needs washing before she goes into them? I wouldn't take any chances - if you still have some being sick - take them to the vet today - but get him/her to examine them in the car - dont take them into the surgery unless you have to. If you can take someone in with you they can sit and wait your turn while you stay with the pups in the car, and the vet will come out when its your turn.

There's something called cricopharyngeal achalasia and I believe that some breeds get this. This wd. only be confirmed on x=ray though.

I hope that all's well, but maybe a visit to thevet wd. be best.

HI ALL
Just to update you. I have spoken to my vet who as she has seen 2 of the pups already since this has been going on for something else, She does not seem overly concerned and feels that it is probably to do with the food that they have been weaned on to. She has advised me to wean them on to a different brand over the weekend and see how it goes, and that if this does not help or they appear to be unwell in any other way then she would like to see them again.

UPDATE

Not very good news. it all took a turn for the worst over the weekend. Mum started being sick on Friday so i took her and 2 pups to the vets on sat am. The vet thought it may have been a slight case of KC as mum gave a little cough before throwing up, so all were put on antibiotics, and a diet of chicken and rice. Pups have thrived and all seem well no sickness anymore or major diarehea. but Mum has got worse, She has been continually sick and has a pussy discharge from her privates, so back to the emergency vets this morning, as she will not eat or drink and even if i could force a little water, she threw it up. They have kept her in today and put her on a drip as dehydrating, they are running blood tests this morning, and may have to do an exploratry op, depending on what the results are(results due any minute now).I think the KC theory is now out the window as she no longer coughs in any form, So fingers crossed please that all can be sorted. I will keep you all posted

Well the vet has just called to update me. She has not been sick at all since she has been there. Her blood is all good and normal. theyv have xrayed her abdomen and all is ok. they say looks a little gassy but nothing major. They have got her to drink a little water, and have now put her on a drip, so they are waiting to see if the water makes her sick again/ They have told me to phone back at 6 ish for an update but they want to keep her in over night just to keep an eye on her!!! So good ish news , as nothing major found, lets hope it is maybe something she has eaten or just a tummy upset??
Is this normal to keep them in over night rehydrating when no one will be there anyway???

Brinny
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 01.09.03 14:08 UTC
Yes, it is normal, someone will call in from time to time, the dog will sleep don't worry. Even if she removes the drip it will do no harm but of course it will do no good either.

Thankyou for your notes, Just to update everybody, Mum is doing really well, she was kept in the vets on Monday and overnight on a drip to rehydrate her. She was given blood tests and xrays etc, and there is no sign of anything major happening. The vet thinks it could have been something she has eaten so like us when we have foodpoisoning. I picked her up on Tuesday morning and finally got her to eat a little bit of warm chicken and a treat in the afternoon. She has perked up in herself and is back to more like her normal character, and she has again eaten a little this morning. Pups are all doing fine and have not been sick since the original couple of days and the vet feels that this is also part of mums bug that got passed on via the milk. So all is well that ends well, and i hope she never scares me like that again!!!!!!.
