Would people recommend Program or Frontline for flea prevention in a 6 month old Golden? Also, can I buy either of those over the internet, or does it have to be from my vet?

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi
I personally think frontline is better. It can be obtained from your vet...or...by the sound of what other people have previously posted, a place called vetmedic on the web which I would imagine is cheaper.
It can be bought in a 3 or 6 pack, very easy.

I've tried vetmedic, but they don't have it on the website. What sort of price is it from the vets? (Hope you don't mind me asking :) )

Hiya
no problem, the vet where I used to work has just gone up a bit in price (dont know if thats the same for all). 3 pack is roughly £20 and 6 pack is roughly £30....much cheaper to go for a 6 pack really lastiung you 6 months.
good luck

p.s, sorry I cant help with vetmedic, I only heard about it on here through others.

Hi to get frontline from vetmedic you still need to obtain a prescription from your vet. Gillian

yes, it is a POM medicine (prescription only medicine). You would still need the vet to prescribe it.

Is Program the same?

Thanks

Yes it is. The reason these flea products are not sold in normal shops is because they are not licenced to sell the chemical which is conatined in them. They sell such things as bob martins (spit!) and johnsons which quite honestly, you may as well feed the dog an apple and expect it to get rid of fleas  .

Program, stronghold, frontline, advantage etc are all POM and must be obtained (or prescription obtained) from your vet.

They work though..dont worry about that :)

actually program is not quite the same as frontline - program stops the cycle of the flea but doesn't actually kill the fleas on your pet or in your carpets etc. Frontline - kills the fleas within 24hrs but only the ones which jump on your pet, the other 2000 or more will be in your carpets, furniture, dog bedding etc so you will need to treat the house too :) hope this helps.

I use program for my lab and akita - both seem fine on it and no fleas

Hi, I use frontline on my dog and my cats and have obtained both over the internet WITHOUT prescription from an Australian website. I think it was Canine chemist, but have emailed my sister to check (as she placed the order). I think there is the possibility that duty may be charged, but we were lucky. When my sister lets me know, I will post the website on here.

Thanks for the links - I've added them all to my favourites for future reference. I sent an email to vet-medic asking if they could supply either frontline or program (before the other replies on this thread). They can supply frontline with a prescription as stated above. However, they have a sister site, based in Ireland, http://www.vet-medic.ie which can supply program without prescription. So my plan is to visit the vet and get Dylan checked and a first supply of program, then buy more supplies from this Irish site. BTW, for a large dog, 6x program tablets costs £20.37 and shipping over £20 is free within the UK. Hope this helps someone else as well.

Sarah

Edit to make the link work
