Topic Dog Boards / General / Sturdy Stuffed Toys? Any suggestions?

I have a JRT who anytime you buy her a stuffed toy rips it to shreds in less then a minute. Less if it squeaks. I've tried the hard bite type stuffed toys. But are there any brands that are really strong? I have another dog who really loves the toys but sooner then later the JRT will get ahold of them and tear then to shreds. It looks like a stuffed animal exploded in the living room!! :D There is fluff EVERYWHERE. Pieces of eye, ripped apart cloth and the squeaker of course has been chewed to peices as well. I've tried the ones that actually bark or oink and she does the same thing, tears then to shreads, then chews the sound box to peices. Are their any brand that are made of leather or something? Something that might withstand her scissor teeth? She lasts a little longer with regulation tennis balls, but she still seems to strip all the green felt off of it within a few days. She needs a new tennis ball about every few days. So I would appreciate a few brands of toys that you've found are very tough and last pretty well with your dogs.

Thanks!

Hi,

Typical terrier!!!!! ha ha, they just love ripping up ald killing things.

Have you thought about a stuffed kong toy, but go for one larger than she really needs and also make sure it's a black one, because they are stronger. I know it's not a stuffed toy, but I don't think there is anything out there that can withstand a terriers jaws.

HELLO,
i have a staff. and we have the same problem. i have brought those virtually indestructable bones(but he gets board after a while). he has a hard rubber ball that gets filled with treats (which he hasn't attempted to destroy! A pet shop owner told me when i was looking for toys for him that hard toys are worse because they can easily sink their teeth into them. she advised me to get a latex like toy, that stretches, i did and it lasted him a while, he did eventually rip it but because it was stretchy he kept half to play with. he has millions of toys, most half chewed! i find he takes the squeak out of the noisy ones also (maybe they just anoy them!) its funny he gets alot of tennis balls, the cheaper ones he rips to shreds in seconds, but the decent ones he plays with throwing them around and squidging them in his mouth, he seems to like them so much that he hasn't attempted to destroy them either!

We had the same problem until one day we gave the dog a couple of spare human toy. They last much longer, probably have higher safty standards than for dogs. If you go around boot sales you can pick them up very cheaply.

Hello try a empty plastic lemonade bottle minus lid and plastc piece around the neck of the bottle.

My Staff plays for ages with one. Noisy though be warned.

Lol...my Staff is JUST the same...She will actually eat it though so we have to watch her or else we find 'tennis ball' poos and bits of fluff sticking out her rear end! Not pleasent!

Also I can vouch for the lemonade bottle idea! Especially if you drop a few nibbles inside it :D

Cardboard boxes provide hours of entertainment too, but not for me who is picking up bits of cardboard for days :)

We have terrible trouble finding safe toys for our Ridgeback - the limited collection now stands at a KONG , an huge bolster float thing form a boat and a Havaball , for limited periods any plastic bottle (lemonade, fabric conditioner, milk conatiner etc gets washed and given to Blaze to play with until they start getting nibbled!) empty egg boxes and cardboard boxes are excellent too. However we have found no soft toys that survive - and trouble is Blaze loves soft toys - without them he tends to become the Sockness Monster and no sock is safe - so we have come up with an idea that works for us - a scrap of Vet Bed is great - and he hasn't been able to destroy it - I'm now sewing some Vet Bed into a simple teddy for him!! You could give it a try.

LOL at Sockness Monster!:D Bet hes a knicker nicker too! Morse loves socks rolled into a ball and thrown with vigour. He fetches them from the garden now so Im hoping we can soon play outside as hes getting too big to play with inside - so far the great outdoors is too interesting to stay with boring mum!

Tennis balls are potentially dangerous for dogs; the covering is abrasive on the teeth and swallowed bits of ball have been knowned to result in some dogs deaths. The only safe ball is one that has a rope attached so that it can be removed in an emergency.

If you go to www.aussiedog.com.au they have brilliant toys which Nina Bondarenko recommends they are built to withstand the bull breeds etc. They are not cheap and need proper fixing but it might be an option for keeping dogs occupied!
