Topic Dog Boards / General / Importing question

Hi all,
I have been reading up on Importing, and understand the procedures which are in place. However has anyone ever imported a dog from Australia? I would have thought that seeing as Australia is a non-rabies country, there would be no need for rabies shots. However I have been told that if I did import a dog from Oz I would either have to put him through 6 months quarantine or ask the breeder to keep him until he is 10 months.

Does anyone know if this is correct, I will be ringing DEFRA tomorrow, but being an impatient type, I thought I would see if I could find anything out in the meantime.

Thanks in advance
Amanda

Hi, UK animal import regs. are the same for rabies free countries as others. Any country which is included in the Pet Passport scheme (inc. Australia) you have the choice of either complying with all the pet passport requirments for microchipping, rabies shots, blood tests and then the waiting period, or the 6 month quarantine period. Non pet passport countries then it is just the quarantine option. We have a pug coming in from Australia later this year (and we have one going out there too), She will be coming in with a pet passport and will be almost 1 year old by the time we get her.
bye
Gwen
