Gus is now 10 months and has been a dream to live with . He was fully housetrained ( day and night) at 5 months and we have never had any problems ...until now. He is NEVER dirty in the house .
He has been cocking his leg outside for a couple of months now and always tells us when he wants to go outside but lately he has cocked his leg the odd time while in the house . He only seems to do it if the kids have left an item of clothing slung over the back of a chair for example . Its not because he needs to wee. Does anyone know why he should have started to do this ? Do they normally go through this stage as I cant remember my last dog doing this at all ?
Lel
Hi Lel,
Sounds quite normal to me! Just marking territory as such, like you say, not actually needing a wee! Our dog started doing the same when he was about the same age as Gus (and our last boy did too). He is now 16 months and hasn't tried it for a good while, but I do keep a close eye on him. Also, I didn't let him get away with it at the time he was trying it on - it was a case of being one step ahead and as soon as I saw him sniffing and the leg going up, he would get shouted at and sent straight outside into the garden - even though it wasn't a case of needing a wee, just the leaving him out there on his own for 5 mins did help - he soon stopped cocking his leg in the house. I'm sure you won't have too many problems with Gus - just remember his testosterone levels are high at the moment, so bear with him and keep your eye on him so that you can catch him in the act!! It's no good telling him afterwards!

Sounds like the dreaded adolescence has hit him Lel. Hudson only did that once in the house ..he didn't dare do it again :D :D I wouldn't let him get away with doing it at all. I sharp and loud NO! and put him outside for a minute or two should work :)

I have only caught him at it once and so havent been able to tell him off for the other times. I only know he has dne it because of the telltale signs . I did shout NO and the shock on his face was a picture . I never need to tell him off usually.
I Have told the kids to make sure they dont leave anything lying around ( but you know what boys are like  )
Does it normally pass in time ?
maybe the shock of being told off will cure it - he has been so good up to now .

I don't have the leg-cocking issues... willis can't cock his leg without falling over, so he stoops and wees all over his front legs

:D
Edit - not in the house, might I add...yet.

If he does Chloe I am sure you will have very noticeable telltale signs :D :)
You wil have to get him some waterproof socks for the meantime :)

When I have washing on the line I often find my precious boys have claimed it as their own....

Out of interest, how old is Willis Chloe?

He's a year old. Many big danes don't cock their legs though, because they do actually fall over...so he kinda perches over an especially tall blade of grass and wees all over his legs instead. bless.

quite frankly, you need to cut his balls off. this bahovior is linked to hormones and feeling the need to mark his territory. james started doing this and then we cut his balls off and he stopped.

sorry lel honey,i meant Jerry
Jerry, what a bizarre response. I'm glad that I'm not one of your dogs if you want to take that sort of action after one episode in the house. What would you do if he had chewed up one of the sofa pillows, extracted all of his teeth?

so far the only clever response i've got is from scattergood. the rest of you should stick to drama.

We should stick to drama??! We're not the ones suggesting "cutting off b*lls" for NORMAL MALE INSTINCTS. Tell me Jerry...does your wife/boyfriend/other half stop you using the toilet when you leave the lid up? Or sew your mouth up when you talk a load of rubbish?

ooh, sorry, scattergood was the LEAST clever. just re-read it. chloe gets the most clever award for suggesting that i've had everything in my house emasculated. :) -- however, that last one hurt! :)

thank you....i was offended that you did not pick up on my subtle answer (and the fact I had to look up "emasculated") :)
Oh Jerry feeling hurt!! Clearly not as insentient as he makes out.

Jerry, you have to expect reactions like the ones you have recieved. We are dog lovers so when someone responds like you did,we found it quite worrying .If you want to post comments like yours you must be prepared to take back what you give without being rude.We would welcome you to join in our conversations, but if you insist in starting arguements,it is not fair on us that want to enjoy chatting to genuine people.Sorry to be harsh but we have had quite enough thoughtless individuals on this site already.
