Can any one help my friend Rose. Last year her labrador got stung on the bottom by a wasp, the result of this was the dog's head swelled up and Rose took her to the vets. The vet told her that the reaction was severe, and that if the dog was stung again it would need to have Epipan or it would not survive especially if it gets stung in the mouth or throat. This silly vet then frightened Rose by saying that she could not prescribe the Epipan as it is human medicine only.
So do you have or have you had a similar problem and what did you do? Did your vet give you something for the dog?

I don't know whether it's the same thing but my dog Tess had an allergic reaction once. We never did discover what it was but her face swelled up and her eyes were almost closed when we got her to the vets (about half an hour after we first spotted it !!). The vet gave her an injection but advised us to keep some Piriton (available from any chemist) handy for if it ever happened again. Tess is a springer and the vet advised us to give her a bit less than 1 tablet.

I know several people who swear by Piriton for stings on both dogs and humans Polly :)

Epipens carry adrenaline for people likely to suffer from anaphalactic shock. It could be caused by stings, nuts, latex etc etc. Its an individual thing.

Can't see why adrenaline should be a human only thing though.

But never the less, Piriton liquid (the drowsy type for kids), works wonderfully on dogs for allergic reactions. Keep the liquid not the tablets, as if she was stung, you would have difficulty in getting the tablets down her. Liquid can be syringed in & just slide down.

But hey, its an unusual problem, so lets hope it doesn't happen again.

I have a severe reaction to wasp stings and Piriton deals with most of my reactions - initially I was also told I needed to carry a dose of something (I can't remember what!) - but since being stung twice over the last couple of years now always carry Piriton. Anaphlactic shock is different to a severe reaction though.......
