Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Whelping box - pig rail
- By Skimpy [us] Date 30.08.03 19:47 UTC
Just had a whelping box built for my small bitch (our first) I am afraid the pig rail was placed so high as not to be effective. Any advice on height? Thanks all.

Hi I breed minis and always use a pig rail, I would have thought 4 inches would be OK, sometimes you need to raise it as the pups grow because they get wedged under it, they are quite active. You are likely to find that your bitch will try and cover the pups with her bedding in the first 2 weeks.
Hope this helps smithy

When your bitch lies on her side, how high is her spine? You want the rail to be roughly that height, so that if she lies against it there is a secure space underneath for a pup. I find the rail is only needed for the first week at the most.

I agree with JG....spine height is about right....and although I left my rail in, it was only needed for the first 5 or 6 days.

Take care
