Topic Dog Boards / Health / Might Be Bloat?
- By Christine Date 30.08.03 14:04 UTC
Just got back from vets with Sweepy. This morning she looked a bit plump, I told her she was getting fat 7 was not getting much dinner tonight! By 1.30pm she looked pregnant so went straight to vets, xrays show some gas & undigested food in stomach. Vets given her injection of buscopan, her tummy is swollen, not hard like typical bloat, so we are waiting till 5.pm to see if it goes down, if not it`s an op.
What a nightmare these past few wks have been. Lets hope it goes down eh??

Very suprised your vet didn't insert a tube down her neck to release the trapped gas from her stomach!
Hope she'll be ok.

He did that when Gwen bloated Lara but it didn`t work & they still operated, maybe I should have mentioned it??? There is not as much gas as Gwen had, but her dinner from last night is there.

Hi all, many thanks for all your best wishes, we really felt them :)
When the op was finished we came home & got cage set uo for, I wanted it in bedroom but it wouldn`t fit by 1/4 inch. Took me couple of hrs before I said we should have put it in folded & then set it up! So Sweep wouldn`t settle, kept crying, had to take her out on lead & she did a piddle. Back in & while later she`s crying again, out again to do her jobs, she is a star! :) This time hubby gets cage in bedroom & she is now settled, comfy as can be expected but not distressed anymore & sleeping.
Sweepy is a labrador, 6yr+3mths. There is no one cause of food compactation or bloat/torsion. There are a lot of studies into it but noones yet identified a reason.
We have had a very stressful time over here with exceptional heat. I also have her litter brother with a torn cruciate compounded with other arthritis of the tibia & hip, he had a crisis a few dys ago, so to say I`m a little stressed as well is an understatement. Also Sweep & her daughter are due in heat any time now. I`m sure stress has been the major factor in this. She had 2 ch/carcasses last night for dinner, she`s had them before & thats what they all had last night, without problems, & thats what came out undigested. I know dogs feel our stress & unhappiness, at least I know mine do. And she is sensitive, but then she`s a lab! :) You know Laddie went in his cage without any probs when I went to take her out, he`s a star as well! Well i`ll just say all my lot are :) :) Thanks everyone, much appreciated xx

Thanks guys :)
Sweep had an uncomfortable night, she kept needing to piddle cos of all the fluids she had during the op & I had to keep taking her out. She`s much the same today, it`s only natural but hopefully she`ll be more comfy in a day or 2. Iv`e got some nice chicken broth cooling for later tonight for her & I`m afraid it`ll be liquidised grub for her for a while!
I`m like a zombe.

Sweep had diorrhoea during the night & this morning, thought it might be a/bs causing it. She had a weeny bit of scramble egg 10mins later threw it up. Then went on to throw jsut water up. Vets been & given her a whole load of stuff so just got to wait for it to kick in & he`s coming back tonight. Been giving her cool wash downs, shes a poorly girl right now.

Hiya all, Sweepy is a bit more like her self now thank goodness!!!!! :) :) Phewwwww :)
Temp is almost normal & she has had 2 small drinks of water & kept it down, relief. Forgot to say it was gastritis from the op, had visions of her going on a drip I did. We still got the really hot weather here which just makes it all worse. Anyway pantings all stopped, she can lay down now & she had a couple of hours properly sleep and she now not sleeping but not distressed any more at all. It all happened so fast tho.Hope I`ll be moaning in a few days I can`t keep her quiet & she`ll be back to her naughty ways!!! :) :)
Thanks everyone. :)
