Can I just ask if anyone knows WHY white tripe contains no nutrients ??
Lel

I find it hard to believe it contains
no nutrients at all! Why would it be sold for human consumption if that were so?

Found this Googling :)
Black tripe is the smallest of the cow's four stomachs and the rarest of tripes. Thick seam, blanket and honeycomb tripe are all more common but even they are far less popular than they used to be. Tripe comes dressed or undressed. Dressed is washed, cleaned, scalded and bleached and to sell it a butcher needs a licence allowing them to sell prepared as well as fresh meat. Very few butchers now sell tripe even in the north west which used to be its stronghold.
Enjoy :D
Daisy

It's always available in our village butcher's shop.

We get it from a butcher too ( and we are in the North West) - and he sells the honeycomb tripe too .
Gus loves it but looking through a previous post I'm sure someone mentioned the white was no good as it contained no nutirents and only the green was of any benefit to the dog ?? Will have to go back further and re-read I think.
Anyone ..?
Is the honeycomb better than the cleaned stuff? Dont really want to do a google search as I think its disgusting stuff - yuk
Edited to say I've found the post - Corso Girl mentioned the washed white tripe was no good - do you have any further info Corso Girl ??
Any tripe experts on the Board ?? ;)

Hi the white tripe is washed and bleached there is not enough goodness left in it, humans some times eat the white because it is so bland mainly for people that are ill, it is boiled in milk to make it soft all it does is fill you up but dogs get nothing from it . where as the green has all the goodness still left.

Oh! pigs trotters are luverly, you have never tasted meat so tender, I tend not to eat meat these days as I don't like the way things have gone with the slaughtering but I have never been squeamish about which bits I would eat :) and trotters would definately be on the list, I think cheeks would be the same :p although I don't think I have tried them.

Tripe and onions my grandma used to cook this when we were kids. I havent had it for years but always remember it tasting nice

We used to eat pigs trotters when I were a lass....my pa had Irish parents and liked the finer things in life :D :D

Another popular item in thepolish diet "Zimne nozki" or "Galareta". Cook pigshead, remove all meat and put through a mincer (inclusing ears). Season add cooked vegetables and pur into dishes and llow to set. With all the gelatin in it should set on its own, or you might need to add some more gelatin. Serve cold with lemon squeezed on, or vinegar.

Sounds just like brawn, Brainless! Very popular in this country at one time.....

It is very popular in Poland where it is made into a sort of soup/stew, usually quite highly seasoned. I won't touch it, but my ex=husband I am told made very good "Flaczki" :D
Beef Tripe comes in various colours - black, dark brown, light brown and sometimes a little grey in colour according to what the cattle is fed on. Sheep Tripe is generally green or light brown/tan. None of the colours are rare it just a seasonal thing. The 'honeycomb' tripe is the part of the stomach which is nearest the 'arse' (excuse french) and cows have a second stomach called the 'bible or manifold' since it consists of pages of very fine layers of tripe which holds all the grass. This part takes a lot of washing through in order to remove the grass and is excellent for puppies. The white tripe is bleached and as corso girl stated has no nutritional value to a dog. As regards pigs heads all meat from the head goes into sausages. Hope this helps
Yes also in tesco's Finest but not eyes and lips as far as I am aware. They probably go off elsewhere. Well we know where the ears go dont we!!
Beef cheek is banned in this country and all EEC countries (waste of good meat I think) so any beef cheek sold comes from abroad and from NON EEC plants.
EEC plants are randomly tested for e-coli and salomela (hope Ive spent it right).

I remember when I used to deliver car parts a couple of years ago and I used to have to deliver to a small industrial estate . One of the units had a sign saying Blah Blah finest sausages ( cant remember the correct name - so I will have to call it blah blah ;) ) .
If you had seen the state of the place anyway you wouldnt have eaten them - but when a van pulled up and proceeded to deliver a supermarket trolley full of just pigs heads ... well .. lets just say I have never eaten sausages since that day :(
