molosser came from molossi which were a group of people from north west greece and albania who had famous strong wardogs.they were imported to rome.they were wolf like not like modern mastiff type.
As Pynadeth mentions the word come from Molossi - an ancient race . The Assyrian kings maintained large kennels of Molossians, huge Mastiff-like dogs that were used for hunting and war - so giving the group name of Molosser today .
