Topic Dog Boards / Health / neck sore off collar - dobe
- By jules [gb] Date 29.08.03 17:04 UTC
Hi I need some advice on what sort of collar to put on my 4 month old dobe. At the minute she is wearing a half choke half leather (as recommended by training class) but it seems to be wearing her fur away on her neck (underside). I have taken it off but need to know what sort of collar to put on her that will stop the fur wearing away but will also aid in training.

Thanks Jules

Hi Jules

I get this problem so with some of mine I plait about 15 strands of thick wool to make a collar and use that when they don't need to be wearing their "proper" collars.

Those of you with pups who are intending to show will also find that wearing collars 24/7 will make the hair on their necks flat and can spoil the appearance of the flow of the neck/shoulders/back

Hi Christine,

I will try that with the wool, also do you advise that whenever possible to leave any sort of collar off eg when she is in the house.

Also will it grow back????????

Thanks jules

Hi Jules

Had this problem with my dobe when I used a check chain and it will grow back fine, I never used to put a collar on mine when in the house (but made sure she could never escape obviously) and then used a half check for training or u can buy the webbing check collars.

Thanks Nikki,

I have actually got a webbing half choke collar so I am going to put that on her when I take her out and have her with no collar in the house.

Cheers Jules

I have a couple of padded webbing half-checks that are really soft and comfortable for the dogs neck :)

I find the webbing collars are really light and don't affect my dogs fur at all and its worn 24/7 as I have a young child and there's always the chance of an accident. If he were to get out accidentally I would hate to see my dog out alone without his collar and contact no's.
