- By LisaLQ [gb] Date 10.06.03 06:23 UTC
Greyhounds and lurchers.
Because they're graceful (ok, apart from my two!), loving, gentle with kids (on the whole), lazy and playful when they want to be too, and there are so many needing homes!
I have two lurchers, with 5 kids, and they're the best dogs I've ever known.:)

In an ideal world I would have 4 dogs.A Boxer,Great Dane,Mastiff and a Rotweiler. In reality I have a Boxer puppy and he's wonderful. They have such lovely faces that you can snuggle and kiss, lively, bouncy personalities that can keep up with the kids, friendly natures always ready to say hello and are the most magnificent dogs ever created(IMHO).I love big, musculer, short haired dogs and a Boxer fits the bill perfectly(I realy don't want to look"hard" just not keen on small dogs or hoovering!!)

Hi Em,
I bet you are getting excited about your new baby, make the most of him while he's little.Charlie's 13 weeks now and 3 times the size he was the day we got him.I can't wait to see what he's like when he's fully grown,he seems to go a darker red every day!

hi hazel
when we went to look at bradley he was very light fawn with white toes and he still had a hint of blue in his eyes. he looks just like his dad. he seems to have a little cheekiness about him.
whilst we at the breeders he let off a lovelly low bark which scared him so he broke out in little yaps whilst backing up, bless. at present the breeder is feeding him on pedigree , i would like to put him on a complete gradually what do you feed your pup on?
can't wait until saturday to excited for words?
- By hazel30 [gb] Date 10.06.03 12:51 UTC
Hi Em,
After much thought and research I have decided on Nutro, mainly because my breeder recomended it and Charlie loves it!I use Nutro choice large breed puppy. He's such a piglet, our last boxer was such a fusspot ,it is such a novelty to see how much I should be feeding him as opposed to how much I can get him to eat!I remember Georges breeder telling us that she individualy fed the pups, Charlies breeder didn't.Charlie obviously benefited from the competition as he LOVES his food. All the best for Saturday, life will never be the same again,
Hazel
P.S.Is Bradley the singleton?I don't supose either feeding method will make any diference to him!

yes poor thing but he has developed really well loves people and his teddy. but will not chew his food he sucks it up bless

Hi Hazel
I also own 2 big, happy, bouncy boxers and I wouldn't swap them for the world, such a wonderful breed!!! My top four most wanted dogs would have to be a boxer (obviously!), dogue de bordeaux, mastiff and a bulldog!
- By Carla Date 10.06.03 08:12 UTC
I love Danes, especially blues (I have one now and he's clever, and stunning, and huge - I love BIG dogs). I also love all bull breeds (I'm about to get a bullyxboxer from rescue - they are loyal, good with children, happy and their whole *look* really appeals to me).

I have a very soft spot for the mini schnauzer (big dog in little dogs clothing). Will always love Dalmatians (I'm about to foster one) as they are so striking and are so totally devoted to people. And one day I want a GSD, I just think that with the right handling these dogs are the most faithful and loyal dogs. That just about covers it :)
- By graceb [gb] Date 10.06.03 08:28 UTC
Well Tanya, I love dogs! To commit myself it would have to be Danes :D Big soppy lumps, excellent family dogs, and very loving as long as you don't mind slobber ;) I have recently taken on a Border Collie pup as well, and she is ace. Very quick to learn, and very quick...unlike the Danes. She is also a blue merle, so stunningly pretty (not that I am biased!)
The true love on my life was in fact a Rottweiller who I lost to cancer at the age of seven years, but I could never have another as it would always be living in Demus's shadow :(

I too like Gun Dogs but have to say the Gordon Setter is definitely my favourite - that's why I bought one :-)

If I had the time, space and lifestyle I would love a whole lot of gundogs - especially a chocolate lab - they are so beautiful.

- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 10.06.03 10:24 UTC
Sorry its got to be Border Collies for me although Ive quite taken a fancy to a certain Aussie Shepherd puppy I know :D Gillian
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.06.03 10:51 UTC
Got to be the dalmatian.
They're so beautiful, elegant, loving, active, happy-go-lucky, loyal, comical, companionable, mischievous - and they teach you to develop a relaxed, tolerant and laid-back attitude to life.

You're never alone with a dalmatian - even when you want to be!

Second would the (lean) black labrador.
:)
- By LIZZY [us] Date 10.06.03 11:21 UTC
love all dogs but its got to be the english cocker spaniel, theyre such lovely caring dogs as well as beautiful to look at- although i wouldn't say no to a damation either!
:) Liz
- By archer [gb] Date 10.06.03 17:26 UTC
ELKHOUNDS-independant,intelligent,wicked sense of humour, sociable with people and other dogs, energetic etc,etc....oh yes and very beautiful!!!
Archer
- By lel [gb] Date 10.06.03 17:32 UTC
Its got to be Staffys for me - they love to run about and have loads of energy but they love to "crash out" too on the sofa . Cant even give a proper explanation for it - I just love 'em :D
Lel
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.06.03 11:02 UTC
Have to agree 100%, but I am oh so biased, lol!!!! :D come on Archer, spill the beans who are the parents of this glint in her parents eyes!
- By archer [gb] Date 11.06.03 17:35 UTC
Hi Barbara,
IF things go to plan the pup will be by Jack(CH.Steldawn Wiseguy) out of a Gigolo/Quickstep daughter.I'd set my heart on either a Gigolo or Wiseguy son(will have to be my last-no more room) so what more could I ask-just hope things go right.
Your pups must be almost 6 months now-any going in the ring?It must be so exciting to have pups you have bred being shown.
I've decided to go to Houndshow so I'll see you there!!! I'm having to drive myself as the 'chauffeur' has to work-hate driving when I don't know where I'm going-will probably get lost!!
Nikki.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.06.03 20:26 UTC
It may seem that way, but they were only born on 28th Feb! So nearly 3 1/2 months. Sue Wrigley's daughter has the pick of the girls. She went to her first ringcraft recently, and it was a match. She won! She is like her Mum (Kizi) and half sister (Jozi) full of confidence, and a high opinon of her self :D She will be out at City of Birmingham, aged 6 months 1 day!

Sadly her lovely brother has gone to long time elkhound owners in Plymouth, and they have no interest in showing him, they showed one of their dogs once and didn't like the experience. Can't say I blame them, as it is a long way from there to any Champ shows.

Hoping I can get jozi mated in next few weeks, as I have a lady who has just lost her Eskamere Elkhound at 14 locally, and she wants a bitch pup to keep the other 9 year old Elkhound company. If I cannot persuade them to show, then I may show her myself, and of course Bryony will be having pick dog to show and work, that is if we can ever get a litter on the ground, LOL :D
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 12.06.03 17:19 UTC
Oh Brainless your pups were born the same time as mine and I'll be there on Gundog day at City of Birmingham and so will the rest of the litter, oh, I can't wait are we mad entering a champ. show at 6 months and 1 day, looking at my lad I think I'll have fun and at least we can provide the show with the entertainment value:D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.06.03 12:52 UTC
LOL :D your pups will have a whole two days on mine to perfect it's antics, as we are on first day and you on third, so sadly the monkeys won't get to meet!
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 10.06.03 17:36 UTC
Hi Tanya,
I would have to say all dogs, I've had a few different dogs whilst growing up .... I've had a couple of rough collies, one tricolour and one sable and white, who were adorable and very noisy (at least Major, the sable was :) ) You had to bring out his lead on the quiet or he went mad, and he barked constantly while on his walk, he was very funny, although sadly they are both long gone. I've also had a GSD and a cocker spaniel - I know no difference is there :)
But since I've had my own dogs, I have Baillie, a golden retriever who is soooo cute and just my best friend and we are getting a Great Dane puppy sometime this year, hopefully!!! I really love big dogs, don't ask me why!!
You never know if I win the lottery one of these days, and had loads of room, money and time..... who knows how many I'd have and what kinds? They're all brill!
Luv

I do love my crossbreeds, a bit like a lucky dip, you never know exactly what you are gonna get! Bust to choose a breed it would have to be the Australian Cattle Dog - good workers, independent, protective, and with a wicked sense of humour!

I do also have a soft spot for Black Labs though, which I grew up with, but unfortunately they are not ideally suited to agility, which I have also taken a liking for
- By britney1000 Date 10.06.03 22:28 UTC
I have had a few dog's over the last 34 years, my latest baby is a 9 week old Dogue de bordeaux, but I saw a long coat akita at crufts and fluffy teddy's did not have a look in I could have snuggled up for hours.

I know they are a no no in the show world but I still love the look of them, particularly the one I saw.It was so stunning.
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 11.06.03 11:24 UTC
hi,
i love my bulldogs i love all their traits.....oh where do i start......stubbornness,faithfulness,protective and kindly in there ways...certainly not dogs that will jump at your every command, but they do obey but only when they are ready...if they decide they do not want to go for a walk or get out of my car i have got hefty problems on my hands...i love my deerhounds too they were not easy to train..they have inexhaustible amounts of energy and limited interlect :D but i love all types of dog........but would NEVER be without a bully:)
jane
- By Gabrielle Date 11.06.03 12:14 UTC
It has to be the Australian Shepherd...
Loyal, guarding, very clever, fast and very loving........ well at least my three are...:-D, but then they are all out of the same family, dad and two daughters....... :-)
I also love my rescue GSD, for a dog that had such a bad start in life, she is an absolute sweetie, who loves everyone..........
Has to be Pastoral dogs every time for me...
Gabrielle
- By jmo [gb] Date 11.06.03 12:50 UTC
For me its got to be the bulldog, I have two and really wouldn-t be without them. To me they are the funniest dog I have ever come across, they really do make you laugh, it's almost like they have a sense of humour. They are stubborn, can be lazy and do not always do as they are told but I have such fun with my dogs and I will have bulldogs for the rest of my life

- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 12.06.03 17:16 UTC
Spanish Water Dogs, Spanish Water Dogs, Spanish Water Dogs. Brains, beauty, affection and at the moment I have a wonderful boy with the most appealing eyes in the world. Whilst they are still half in their mother being born, if the bags off from the head, I have known them to feed whilst part of their body is still inside their mother. At two weeks once their eyes are open they are getting up on their legs, 3 weeks they are running around, 4 weeks retrieving and doing some commands!!!

I've been involved in rough collies, shelties and pom's before and although I adore rough collies I don't think I'll ever be without a Spanish
- By Helen29 [gb] Date 13.06.03 12:03 UTC
I have a 9 month old Weimaraner who in every way is fab, her only problem is feeding she grumbles round her food bowl, any ideas anyone. She is very willing to learn would just be great if i could find another puppy class so i can keep up with her training.
- By tohme Date 28.08.03 10:29 UTC
Read the Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson; this will help enormously.
- By mali fan [gb] Date 28.08.03 10:39 UTC
I can't just pick one breed, it's too difficult.
1st has to be the Belgian Shepherd, I've never seen anything as quick and agile, but soo loving. 2nd comes the GSD, another agile, intelligent, loyal dog. Then last, but not least it has to be the Stafford. Very intelligent (although some might not agree), loving and a TOTAL CLOWN!!:D
P.P. Can't help being biased!!!

lol Sarah
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 28.08.03 18:21 UTC
Hi I love gundogs too - Pointers first as theyre poetry in motion, explorers, gentle and soft of mouth, intelligent and quick to learn - not always what the owner intended!- perfect dogs for long walks. Then its Viszlas - lovely colour and great fun. Also love Rhodesain Ridgebacks for being majestic and protective and active. Actually I appreciate all dogs but prefer big ones I cant squash or step on by accident. Its too hard to choose!:)
- By Lindsay Date 07.10.03 14:19 UTC
Sarah i have to agree - Belgian Shepherd is the number one breed for me too :)

Who else has a breed with 4 varieties for a start?! :D 2 long coats, a short, and a wire/rough coated - what a choice!!! :)

Agree with the quick and agile but soo loving, and add to that humourous, stunningly beautiful, natural, and very very bright dogs who are strong and full of character and yet sensitive.

There isn't an emoticon for "love" on Champdogs as far as i know, but if there was, i would type "Belgian Shepherd" followed by lots and lots of LOVE emoticons.....:) :D

Lindsay
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.10.03 15:34 UTC
Belgians (Groenendael) were my first (Puppy) love, but the real thing for me is the Norwegian Elkhound. Clever, independant, beautiful, Loving, wicked sense of humour, (not to mention pig headed, sometimes gobby, garbage guts) :D :D :D

Just as well we all love different.
- By davidlana [gb] Date 28.08.03 21:28 UTC
Hi

Gundogs = Labs, black and chocolate (yes they will you have to be patient!!)

Birdogs/Gundogs = Cockers, wont leave a stone unturned and when they get the scent brakes on and 'look dad over there'.

Bravest/Kindest/Most faithfull = Jack Russell, small dogs who in their minds are the biggest in the world.

- By willowfarm [gb] Date 29.08.03 12:00 UTC
Well being extremely biased (as I have one) its a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Why? This breed has a great sense of humour, is affectionate and gentle with the family, sensitive, independent and is so intelligent it's scary. On a practical level they have a short coat, aren't noisy ( but if they bark you know you should check it out) , are quiet in the house and laid back, love being with you and will sit at your feet whilst you work, they love the outdoors ( and I think they would walk to the end of the earth to be with you ) . When you need them they are graceful and powerful hunters and guardians. O
Then of course they are the most beautiful colour, and with that unique ridge.

You get the best of several breeds in one here, and its such fun seeing the characteristics show themselves in the breeds behaviour and personality. ( History of the breed suggests Pointers, Mastiff types, Bloodhound, Greyhounds and Bulldogs and the African Hottentot - all lent their strengths to refine the Rhodesian Ridgeback, modelled on the Dalmation breed standard )

I adore most dogs - they are all stars in their own right - just prefer them to be bigger than my cat!

Nikki
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 29.08.03 15:25 UTC
Sorry, you've all got it wrong!!! Spanish Water Dogs.

Beautiful and elegant, look like a Poodle, but kept natural as a dog should be:d Intelligent, in the right hands, wd, beat quite a few gundog breeds and also cd. beat some of the breeds that are at the top of agility, obedience etc. Unforunately in my hands, I don't think that would happen.

Affectionate. Will work all day but when it comes to home time and giving their owners a big french kiss and a cuddle, there's nothing quite like a Spanish!! If you are away from them for 2 seconds, or 20 hours, you are greeted with the same excitement.
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 29.08.03 16:41 UTC
As the owner of a Cocker and Springer - both working, it's gundogs for me anytime - more specifically, Spaniels!

I was brought up as a child with a boxer/dobe cross and then a golden retriever but wouldn't turn back now and its Spaniels every time. I could be tempted by a lab if they weren't so big and didn't have tails to remove the contents of the coffee table. My spaniels are just the right size, medium with big dog personalities, loyal and very very hardworking but still small enough to pick up if needs be. They can't do enough to please and I wouldn't be without them.
- By wreeve99 [gb] Date 05.10.03 14:50 UTC
I have to just comment on this, i was doing a search for shepherd puppies and found this

I ADORE German Shepherds.
I grew up with them, had one 9 years ago that died - have just managed to get another one, thanks to my wonderful husband finally relenting and buying me one for my birthday..
It is as bad as getting a baby !!!
- By crazyspaniel [gb] Date 05.10.03 16:54 UTC
Its got to be a gundog everytime, I adore spaniels and have 2 springers and a working cocker, also have my heart set on a Gordon Setter - not enough room in the car with my 3 at the moment but one day soon I will have a Gordon. If I won the lottery I wuld have huge house and then I would have lots of gundog breeds including Gordon Setter, Pointer, spaniels of course and dachsunds to wake them all up when we are being burgled (grew up showing dachsies)
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 05.10.03 20:33 UTC
Gundogs definately. Large Munsterlanders first then an English Springer (or two) :D
They are so full of character, no two the same, but so alike too.
- By SHAUNIE [gb] Date 05.10.03 21:45 UTC
a breed which are'nt particularly nice to look at i would have to say is the dalmation they have cold nasty looking eyes and can be quite nasty i think thats why you don't see many around there not very popular, don't like the thin looking dogs like lurchers my neighbour has one he's a nasty little bugger with other dogs! and i would'nt recommend a great dane their hard work and sh*t like horses!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.10.03 21:49 UTC
Nice try, Shaunie!
:)
- By mentalcat [gb] Date 05.10.03 22:28 UTC
I would have to say working Black Labradors - you just can't beat them. They're up for anything, love kids (well my two do anyway!), are good pillows, will try anything, listen to all your problems, are hugely beautiful, and are generally the best dogs in the world. Second to them are Yellow labs again working stock and after that come the spaniels and the flatcoats. You could say that I'm a bit biased !!!!LOL

Mmmmmmmmm,

I love lots of breeds, bull breeds (i have a staffy x), lurchers, sighthounds, i LURVE dallys (used to know a couple Harvey and Dolly, who ran under the carriage axles when their owner was exerciseing his appaloosas.....spotty dogs, spotty horses, u cant beat it!)....id want a deerhound mebbes, next....but i have a soft spot for setters as well.

Em
- By LynnO [gb] Date 06.10.03 16:09 UTC
Got to be Munsterlanders! Nothing to beat seeing your dog on point, telling it to flush and it produces a brace of pheasants - especially when the next gun's springers have been in the cover and said "nothing in there dad! And nothing kisses like a Munster! Could you let me know which is the bird dog forum.
Thanks
