hi all just wondered if anyone had any advice on trying to stop pups from digging,i know its a dog thing and that exspecially jrts are know for wanting to dig holes but my 2 pups insist on digging in virious parts of the garden its not only my jrt thats doing this but my bc pup is as well any ideas anyone???

i know how you feel..my JRT also loves an occasional dig. Every time i caught him, i'd say loudly "Rocky, NO!" and now he hardly ever digs. I saw him yesterday having a little go, but this was the 1st time in months. He really is unusually obediant,he's excellent...except when out walking and he spots another dog :(
(aww talk of the devil..he's just jumped up for a cuddle :) )

Constant vigilance and a loaded water pistol - they dig, you squirt them and they either locate the source of splash or stop it.:D Or you can set aside a digging patch and hide treats in it for them to go nuts. Good luck.

has for a water pistol thats no good as he loves water, cant let them have a patch to dig in garden as its not the biggest, the thing is merlin my jrt will end up in oz if he carries this on,when i catch either on the strating to dig i shout no then they stop but soon as i look away there at it again, today they havnt been as bad so hopefully me shouting no will work well fingers crossed anyway.

I'd persevere with the "NO", then praise him like mad or give a treat, when he stops.

It doesn't work with my baby Basset tho  ......he's wrecked the flowers in my rockery (not only by pulling the tops off and running around the garden with them hanging out the side of his mouth, but by plonking his great lumoxing ass down on the comfy, bushy plants), and chewed the bush in the corner :( I do as I previously said, and he stops, then goes straight back to it when he thinks I've gone.
He gives the expression of a true Basset....looks totally innocent, as if he's saying "It wasn't me, I didn't do it" lol. He's all sweetness and light...but he's not fooling me anymore. I've cottoned on to all those innocent, sad expressions :D
But hey, I'm still persevering ;) :D

How old is your Jackie?? What colours, etc....I love JR's :)

Hi thumper73! Is your BC pedigree? If she is, what line is she? I've got two of the terrors!
Both my BC's love to dig. When we go to dog shows and camp in our caravan, they are allowed to stay free in our "garden" and will spend hours, side by side digging and "rooting". I've taught them the command "go dig, go dig" and they know exactly what it means, but also I've taught them "stop" which means pause (and they pause the split second you say it, I used to have a little game kinda like musical statues, and the quicker they paused the quicker they got a sausage). I also taught them leave it, which means just that.
Have heard that putting a dogs own poo (disgusting as it may sound!) into the hole they're digging makes them stop, although they'd probably move on and start another.
Best of luck with your pup, gorgeous when they're tiny aren't they!

she is a pedigree border collie 51/2 mths old but im afraid i dont know what line shes from has i rescued her only 5 weeks ago, all the rescue centre knew was she was from a breeder in swindon ,she is beautiful and she is enjoying training so much, she loves to learn new things everyday.
