My sister's Springer Spaniel has recently been diagnosed with something called "Dry Eye Syndrome". Her eyes weep all the time and are stuck closed in the mornings. She has been brought to the vets a few times. First she was given a cream and then a different vet diagnosed her condition and gave her drops. He says her condition is incurable but can be treated with drops but even with the drops she will eventually go blind. She is only two years old. The drops cost £30 every 10 days and the vet seems to be advising that it would be better to put her to sleep. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is there nothing that can be done?

I think your vet is being unnecessarily pessimistic - I know a few older Cockers with dry eye who are doing well on the treatment & no, they haven't gone blind. Untreated, dry eye will result in blindness but not if it's treated quickly, although the treatment is generally for life.

I had a beardie who had this & it did clear up, £3 a day seems a lot for artifical tears you could try contacting this site to see if you can get the drops cheaper, you might have to e mail them

Even if she did go blind there's no eason for her to be pts

Please dont have her Put to sleep just because she's going blind, I have a 16mth springer who has retinal dysplasia and he is blind in one eye and is losing the sight in his other, I would never part with him he is absolutely adorable and gives so much back to us for the work we put in with him.
Blind dogs cope very well and soon learn to adapt to life by using their noses infact a dogs sight is its 3rd most important sense after smell and hearing.
If you really cant look after a blind dog please find it a home their are places that will adopt her and people will take them in, dont have her put to sleep.
