Hi sorry to hear your dog has this, but when was the last time you had his/her heart tested as a lot have what is called a puppy murmur, if you havent been back since puppy vacs then i would go and have it checked again?

Hi
I agree with corsogirl. My bitch has a very slight heart murmur which she has had since birth. She was checked every few months until about 18 months but now it is only checked at her annual check. As corsogirl says it is not unusual in puppies and generally rectifies itself so have your dog checked at the vets for peace of mind.

Is this the bitch that has just had a litter?

Yes, my bitch has just had a litter. Her murmour was checked before mating and the vet advised that it was so slight it wouldn't be a problem and any puppies should not be affected any more than in any other litter. We also had her checked at 5 and 7 weeks and it made no difference. As I say it is very, very slight and many dogs have them without even knowing.

I think we will just have to disagree on this one as I believe we should only breed from fully fit specimens. I agree lots of dogs lead long lives with minor murmers but I don't think I would subject one to the extra stress of pregnancy and welping particularly the toy breeds who have quite a hard time of it anyway.

My bitch is three years old and has a very minor murmour which the vet declared would not be a problem for breeding otherwise we would not have contemplated it.

Sorry pardon! still stands about the heart murmur though, especially as it hasn't been graded or looked at by a specialist.

i agree with you dawn any heart murmur or heart defect should go to a specialist,be scann, ecg,or x rayed and have a certifcate to pass the dog for breeding, not all heart problems are hereity, but cause when devlopenting in the womb between 3 to 5 weeks.

Thea my Tibetan Mastiff had a heart murmer from being a pup, she lived to be 12 years old and had a very active

I'm really pleased to hear that as my Welsh Border Collie has just been diagnosed with one at 8 yrs old and I have been watching her like a hawk waiting for her to keel over! She is as loopy as ever and on the go all the time - perhaps the vet got it wrong!

Welsh Border Collie ??????
However, the vet is probably right, but most dogs lead a normal life until old age, many right to the end. I had a Jack Russell diagnosed with a murmur at 9yrs, she lived to 15, and died of Kidney Failure. She never showed ANY signs of a bad heart. Don't worry!

Sorry not have got back to you Isabel,I have been back in hospital again. I did not breed from Thea,Although people did try to encourage me to, she was top T.M. bitch in the country for 5 years won reserve best bitch at cruft at 10 month and also at 10 years old, to many best of breeds to remember and top rare breed, and best in show at the club show and cruft, sadly she died at 12 years old she went in her sleep, she was fit at 12.00a.m. when bedded down for the night in the kitchen my husband went down 30 mins later and she was dead
