Topic Other Boards / Foo / advise on anti virus download....asap pl

hi all
A thicky needs some advise. :D
With all these worms etc on the go, I was wanting to have a bit of a sort out on pc....now the thing is, years ago when I did this I accidentally deleted important files, and my hubby nearly killed me, as I almost killed the pc. :( He spent hours searching through, and putting it back together again.
So, I was searching through the CD postings for recommendations, and the first one I came across was the Grisoft.com address. I have Windows 98, and apparently I'm not affected by the Blaster worm thing, but am sure I need a more up to date virus protector, so was going to do the Grisoft one. Can you tell me if this is straightforward to use?? Can a thicky like me do it?? Or does it keep asking you question's during the worm clean out, like if you want to "delete this file"? That's what happened to me ages ago, and I deleted them, when I shouldn't have.
My partner could do it, but I keep forgetting to ask him on an evening, and well basically, I want to be able to do it myself.
Any help would make me a very happy bunny :D
Thanks v much

Hi Steph,
Go for it! I managed to do it, and I'm a complete dunce with computers - so if I can do it, anyone can.

yes grisoft is pretty simple. the only way i learned how to use this thing was by experimenting.

my experimenting usually gets me into trouble :)

Anyway, I did it. Well, I didn't really, but half did it..lol. Partner came home as I'd
begun, so I let him finish it off for me. :D :D

But I WILL DEF do it myself next time....maybe's
Thanks very much for the input, ladies :)

LOL Steph, I can sympathise with you there, in the early days I regularly killed my PC by fiddling, then had to learn how to put it right before my partner found out !!!!
You call it learning the hard way

my partner just read this posting, and he said I'd learnt well. When I asked him what he meant, he said, "well you've learnt how important it is NOT to delete file's
Do you think he's being sarcastic?? ;) ;)

I have resently downloaded AVG from grisoft which seems okay except - when I first Boot up is it normal for there to be a red screen come up waiting for a command eg. Yes - No - Heal? (I always clic yes) then everything continues ok until it gets to the page with all your icons, a small note comes on screen to say that Windows will not permit reading of certain files(this is roughly what it says) I just clic OK and then all is well! Do some of you have this download - is mine ok?

Sweep

Hi Sweep,
Do you mean the free download? I have that and have never seen any of the things you describe. Hope someone else comes along or we won't know which of us shouldbe worried;-)

Anne - Yes it is the free download - oh no what have I done? But I can't have done anything wrong 'cos it does everything.
Oh am I in trouble if this isn't normal?
SweeeeeeeeeP :(

Hi Sweep, I have have the free dowload also, it sounds like your virus download is working just fine it's performing a virus check when you log on - there are various options for this, eg whether the software promts you to check for a virus or whether it automatically does it itself - either is ok. When the softare finds a virus it isolates it so it cannot harm your pc - windows is not able to open these - there are various set-up options which will stop these prompts but I wouldn't worry about them if everything is fine with the pc.

Phew!! Thanks for that - I convinced hubby all was okay to download and then had my doubts.

Thanks again

Right Sweep yours must be checking when your computer starts up and I have mine set to run a check at a set time so we are both OK :-D
