i bought a curly coated retriever puppy & he has had his dew claws removed. will i still be able to show him

Would have thought the answer was yes. To be sure I will have to look it up as I don't think it is mentioned in the standard but I am sure the removal of dew claws is OK.

EDIT: have checked and it is ok to remove the dew claws in any breed.

Hi, well I don't know anything about retrievers or other breeds, but in my breed (Briards) it is part of the standard that they MUST have dew claws (double ones in fact) for showing.

Yeah, you can still show them. A lot of gundog breeds have their dew claws done, although after hearing the screams from the pups I must admit I don't have mine done anymore.

:( :(
What are the dew claws for ??
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 28.08.03 18:02 UTC
As far as I can make out Lel, causing injury to both people and the owner of the claws.

If you look in most schedules under Preparation of dogs for Exibition F (B) it states in item 3 b that the removal of dewclaws is allowed.

I think originally dew claws were to enable the dog to get a better grip over rough terrain.
