Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / IS IT RIGHT TO FORCE FEED? PLEASE ADVISE
- By guest [gb] Date 26.08.03 19:41 UTC
My Boxer bitch has never ate for 10 days, she has been to the vet every 3rd day since she first went off her food and had diarea. At first the vet put her on anti-biotics and tablets and paste to help with the diarea. She was on this course for 5 days and when it wasnt working and i took her back to the vets and she was given different medication. After another 2 days with no change i took her back. She has been given various blood tests (i am awaiting results) and a stool sample. The vet can't understand as she has normal temperature and 2 of her blood tests are clear. She is 34/37 days pregnant (unless she has absorbed her pups through this not eating) She has lost a lot of weight. I have tried everything. I am so upset by this as shes my BABY! Today I went and bought some jars of babyfood(pureed suitable for 4 month old) and I put them in a babies bottle prised Kyras mouth open and forced her to drink this baby food. I got it down her and she wasn't sick or anything but i feel cruel in one way but i dont know what else to do and i cant bare the thought of losing her. She is drinking okay and i have special powders off the vet to add to her water. If anybody can offer me any advice at all i will be really very grateful.
Thank You
Jen

The vet can give her an injection to give her an appetite or can put her on a drip if they think it is necessary, I would not be happy false feeding.

I wouldn't force feed either, as there is a risk of the liquid going into her lungs and causing pneumonia :(

Jen,

You sound really worried :(

This must be an awful time for you.....it sounds like your vet is doing all the right things, but maybe it's worth getting a second opinion?

For what it's worth, I wouldn't force feed either. Have you tried giving her something really strong smelling...tuna etc? Sometimes they can't resist.

Hope all goes well.

Take care

Lisa

Hi there is she drinking ok?she needs to be taking fluids in her.
Has she may be in whelp you dont wont her to loose too much weight has an extra treat used to put Fouthglade or pedigree chum cut into small chunks and place in the mouth.
Also try tined Chappie or cat food it has a stronger smell and tends to work and tin fish too.
