Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / 9 month old peeing on suite
- By guest [gb] Date 25.08.03 12:39 UTC
hi i have a 9 month old cairn terrier who has started peeing on our suite, just as well it is leather.
i am really starting to lose patience, i think it may be because he is not allowed on the suite, he alson pees upstairs in the house and we have had to stop him going up there, he is actually coming in from the garden to pee.
i am at my wits end.
we have bought perfect puppy and stuck to the routing for training religiously, but we don,t seem to be getting anywhere.
he is dry at night barr the odd accident and also when we go out, but if he gets out of the kitchen he thinks he can just pee anywhere.
we are really struggling with him at the moment.
please help any advice would be grateful.

Hi there , you can Register with us and then you can answer any questions that we come up with ;)

I would start over again with your pup ...begin again. TAKE him out for a pee every half an hour or so ..stand out there with him and tell him to *Hurry Up* or whatever you use...when he performs , praise him like mad. Keep your eyes peeled for signs that he wants to pee. Don't tell him off when he has an accident , but heap praise on him when he does well - outside ! :)

Buy a kiddy gate and block off the stairs so he cant go up there ..or shut the bedroom doors so he can't get into the rooms.

Put him in the kitchen if you have to go out anywhere ..and then take him straight outside when you return

No puppy is the perfect puppy ;) They pretend to be perfect and then hit adolescence :D :D

Whenever there is a change in behaviour first thing I would recommend is a check up from the vet - especially in cases like this as it's often a urinary tract infection...........

same thing happened with my JRT. Took a while to house train him but then he was fine...until about 9 months.
It started with him just peeing on the floor, then when we visited family in Scotland, he took to peeing on their suite, which thankfully, also was leather. I was soo embarassed, and mother in law was NONE too happy :(
We went back to basics with him and it worked.
Took him outside regularly, after his naps, plays, feeds etc, praised him like mad, then allowed him indoors as soon as he was done. A few days of doing the basics again, and he was fine.
Good luck
Stephanie
