Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Licking and chewing feet
- By martini [gb] Date 20.01.02 21:24 UTC
Hello,

I hope some-one can help me, I recently added a 5 year old Parsons Jack Russell to my family, I bought her from a breeder. She seems to chew and lick at her feet quite a bit which is driving me mad. Are there particular reasons why she does this? I have checked her feet and they look ok.

You need to check inbetween the toes. If there are some red/orange dots then she has harvest mites which could be the cause of her licking and you need to pop her to the vets. Alternatively she could just be very stressed at the moment and is using feet licking as a way at rleiving that. Try getting some natural calming tablets that you can put in her food to reduce the stress she is feeling.

Thanks Bec,

I have had a look but can't see anything but I'm off to the vet tomorrow as Jazz was speyed on 16/1 and has now got a water infection she has got antibotics but they don't seem to be working and what with trying to housetrain I'm having so much fun but she is worth it.

She could also have ear mites! They scratch the ears then get them on their feet.

Other reasons could be habit - she gets your attention
Allergy to something on or around your floors

Hi Martini

Reading yuor posts it could be that your new girl is stressted. Do get her checked by the vet anyway just to rule out anything else buit she seems to have gone through quite a lot lately, being re-homed, trying to house-train(Ipresumeshe was in a kennel before), being speyed and now some infection. She could well have brought mites etc with her from her [revious home - but it could just be that she is having to face a bit too much all at once.

Good luck - I hope she gets better very soon

If all other leads fail, then, in certain breeds like my border terriers, it is purely a habit....albeit an annoying one!!!!!;)

I know that this is a few days old now, but I also have a PJRt, and he goes through phases of doing this all the time, for no reason at all, and yes it is infuriating, but don't worry, if the vet can't see anything, it's probably just an annoying habit, I know I have a few, and dogs can too!!!

My JRT did this all her life, neither the vet or I could ever find anything wrong with her and we just learned to live with it although if we caught her doing it then we would try to discourage it. She lived until nearly 19yrs old so it didn't do her much harm. :-)

My westie Jimmy used to do this until I reduced his protein intake by putting him on "Burns food". They do a good range. If you think it may be ear mites the very best stuff to use is Thornit, you just put a tiny bit of the powder on the handle end of a teaspoon and tip into the ear canals, you can rub a little into her paws too. Thornit is wonderful stuff and will work after months of vet treatment may fail. You can get it from www.championpets.co.uk

Hi Westie Lover

Where are you based? I used to feed my dogs on Burns when I lived in Scotland, now that I have moved down
south (Northants) I can't get it anymore. Mine are now on Jmaes Wellbeloved which I find equally as good
but I miss Burns.

I live in Milton Keynes and get my Burns from Woburn sands - don't know if that's too far for you?
- By KirstyS [gb] Date 28.01.02 15:15 UTC
Hi Digger

No that's not too far for me. Actually I work in MK and tried in vian to get it there too. What's the name
of your pet shop? I'll give them a call.

Thanks For the info

County petfoods - they have a shop at Frosts Garden centre - and wholesale at a farm nearby - they do have a web site : http://www.countypets.co.uk/

Hope this helps

FOR KIRSTY - Where in Scotland did you get Burns food?I am in Aberdeen and have a westie with what seems to be allergies and would like to try Burns.

Main Supplier is in Ayrshire. If you can't get Burns try James Wellbeloved (both about the same price equally as good).
If you email me at ksullivan28@netscapeonline.co.uk I'll get you some contact details for Burns and their website.
