the hair cycle stops while a bitch is pregnant, then after the litter its cast out to make way for the new hair, i got people who wanted pups from me to come and meet the dam in all her glory before shed had them ,as i know that after producing them she has every chance to look like a rag bag!

I expect my mums to lose some coat after whelping, but in mine it doesn't usually happen until the pups are 10-14 weeks old. It is quite normal, and I would think its just hormonal. Usually the coat just thins, along the rib cage, but I have seen shorter coated breeds that do have bare patches sometimes. I give mine a coat supplement like "Restore" from Stock Nutrition. I know when I had my two babies my hair thinned dramatically too a couple of months afterwards - I also went grey almost overnight with my second ( !!) but I dont think that happens to dogs!

Our Rottie lost loads of hair after her pups, she also lost all her tan markings !, they eventually came back but are much smaller than they were originally.

cheers Lorraine

Hi Tilly, I spent a good few days crying everytime I looked into the empty kennel. Like you, I didn't think how upset I'd be when the puppies went to their new homes. We had kept one though, so it became quite nice to just have her to concentrate on. Seven months on, I am still in touch with all the new owners and it was lovely at christmas to get cards and photos from some of them. It will get better, I promise you, and its also nice to have your bitch back to yourself and return to things you used to do before the puppies.
Chin up now, and put those tissues away girl!!
Lorna
ps Tess got bald around the shoulders about 12 weeks post puppies. She now has a splendid coat, thick and shiny as ever.

Hi
my bitch had a litter about 6 month ago and just after the puppies had gone her fur thined a lot all over and it tock about 2 months to come back, she now had a lovley coat, but just before my second bitch had her litter she had a fight (two of my bitch decided that they both wanted the same peace of paper) she lost a lot of fur and when we tock her to the vets he said to give her some Evening Primrose Oil to help it come back, well the puppies are now 7 weeks old and her coat looks better than before she was mated, so try some to see if it helps.
Bobby

PS my first puppy went today and every time i look in on them i keep looking for her.

Tilly, I emailed it to you since it really isn't my 'homepage' but I didn't have any other option for giving it to people!
