Rogue - you are smacking your dog for the wrong reasons - simple as that - it was not "defiance" or anything else - she's a DOG and sometimes they have accidents.
My mother used to smack me on a regular basis - I can clearly remember having slap marks on the back of my legs that stung for ages. She would also clip me round the ears, or wallop me with anything else that was in her hand. She tried it with a saucepan when I was 14 but I got in first that time, and she never did it again - 14 years of resentment that just exploded. If she read this now she would say I was grossly exaggerating and that it was just a little smack - but it wasn't - it was humiliating, frightening and damn painful. All I am saying is that ALL people can get carried away once they start.... and this wasn't even what you would class as "abuse"!!

JG - I have to disagree - for the reasons above I really, really try not to smack my dogs and I NEVER smack my kids. Fpr one, I could never catch Willis in the act anyway - he's normally chewed the walls etc when I am out...and as for my kids - do i want them growing up and turning on me? No thanks. I understand theres a big difference between a quick smack and regular smacking - but when a smack stops working then it has to get harder and harder....
